Chapter 35: Claire’s POV

It’s been a few weeks since I last saw Jordan and broke our professional and personal relationship. It has also been a few weeks since I’ve seen Leo. He had dropped me off at Jasmine’s and ensured that I got inside safely. I have texted Leo vaguely about a few potential contractors interested in my work and I’ve been working diligently on my independent business and locking myself in my suite which was provided graciously by Leo upon our divorce.
I entered a few design blueprints into the Architectural committee – an elite political status group that would launch my career to immediate success. I had just sat down to review more potential contracts on my tablet and I see an email from the Architectural Committee. I feel my heart sink to my stomach and feel the immediate rejection rising. I slowly click the email with a shaky finger but am surprised by the contents.
I had made the cut and was being nominated for the ‘Best New Designer of the Year‘. Being nominated alone means my career has reached its peak and I could not be happier. I immediately think to call Leo and share the news. I reach for my phone and reluctantly call. I didn’t want to depend on him but it felt wrong not to share with him after all he had done for
- me.
“Hello?” I hear immediately after the first ring.
“Hey, I have some news I wanted to share with you. Are you busy?” I ask in a small voice. Leo could reject my conversation for Charlotte. I know her surgery took plac
d she was recovering in his home.
“I’m never too busy for you, Claire. Is everything okay?” He seems happy to hear from me – a relief.
“I entered a few of my design blueprints to the Architectural Committee and they decided to nominate me for “Best New Designer of the Year“.” I wait in silence for his response.
“You’re kidding? You’ve been nominate?” He sounded in disbelief but in an excited way.
“No, I’ve been nominated and I am invited to the Gala where they will be announcing the chosen nominee tomorrow night!” I squeal with excitement.
“I’m so proud of you! I will actually be attending tomorrow night as well. I was asked to help announce the nominees. Would you like me to escort you?” He asks in a way that tells me he’d like to be a part of this moment for me and I think it’s only fair after his support these last few weeks.
“That sounds nice. Pick me up at SP.M?”
“Nothing will distract me from this night. I promise you, Claire.‘
“Okay, I’ll see you soon. And before I forget – thank you, Leo.”
“There’s nothing to thank me for, Claire. This was all you. I’ll see you tomorrow night.”

With that, he hangs up and I feel that flutter he’d given me when we first started dating and it
scared me.
