Chapter 20: Charlotte’s POV
I hear Claire arrive and go upstairs. A few minutes later I hear the shower turn on in the guest bedroom but I don’t hear Leo come in. Had Leo finally left the peasant?
I look around the house in my wheelchair and see no signs of Leo’s arrival. He hadn’t come back yet. I wait for Claire to come downstairs so that I could ask where he was but she stayed upstairs tucked in her room. I expected as much.
About an hour later, I hear the front door open gently and close. I peak around the corner from my room and see Leo come in and watch as Claire
rushes down the stairs as he turns around.
Is that blood?
I watch as Claire leads Leo upstairs and they disappear out of sight. Something didn’t seem right. Leo was never a man to sulk. He always walked with his head held high – displaying his obvious success and dominance. What has Claire do
to him?
I will make sure she pays for what she’s done to my love.
I hear them come back downstairs and peek in the kitchen where I see Claire icing Leo’s face. I hate

the way they looked at each other. I watch closely as Leo seems to enjoy her care and touch. I try to ease drop on their conversation but am only able to catch their facial expressions and I don’t like what I’m seeing. Leo still loves this useless woman.
I silently roll my wheelchair back to my room and wait a moment before calling Claire to my side. I didn’t actually need her help but I couldn’t stand the thought of her being near my Leo any longer.
I’m surprised at how quickly Claire arrived.
“Hi Claire, I need help removing my makeup for the day. My arms are tired after rolling myself around in my wheelchair.” I look at the wipes by my side.
“Okay, Charlotte.” She grabs the wipes and carefully takes one out and gently wipes my face as I close my eyes. She was being tender. There’s no way I’d be able to fake an injury right now.
Wait. She seems a little fuller in the frame, more at peace and tired.
Is Claire pregnant?
That’s what she could’ve been wanting to tell Leo at my celebration. She seemed desperate to talk to him. What I don’t understand is why she decided against telling him and decided to leave instead?
Leo would’ve never let her go knowing she was holding his child. I have to fix this fast – before Leo

finds out or worse, before she finds the courage and
tells him herself.
“Thank you, Claire. That’s all for tonight.” I need her to leave so I can plan my next move carefully.
“You’re welcome. Have a good night, Charlotte.” She leaves the room quietly and closes the door behind her.
Now that I know she’s pregnant, I’ll have to act fast. Leo cannot know what I know. I’ve worked too hard to leave empty–handed. Leo was mine and he will always be mine.
