Chapter 13: Claire’s POV
Chapter 13: Claire’s POV
It’s been a few days since I’ve settled into Jasmine’s home when I get a phone call. I almost expected it
to be Leo. Only when I pulled my phone out to check – I quickly realized it wasn’t.
It was my brother – Matthew. And there was only one reason for him to contact me.
I knew well before I decided to answer that he was going to ask me for money. Matthew was an idle man who enjoyed gambling far too much and had acquired some hefty debts along the way. The worst part was that he never intended to pay for them out of his own pocket. He simply hoped – more like demanded, that me (his sister) who married a billionaire would help cover his costs. Matthew was the most elated when I announced my engagement to Leonardo – not because he wanted to see me happy or settling down but because my husband was wealthy and he saw it a cash roll. A steady source in which he could cover his costs throughout
life.
And It infuriated me.
I had helped Matthew in the past when he had asked for money. What Matthew didn’t know is that the money I was giving him; came from my personal savings. I have never asked Leo for money to cover my brother’s debts. Leo was completely

unaware of my brother’s requests.
“Hello?” I should just skip the pleasantries. He didn’t want to actually talk unless it was an arrangement to retrieve the money he needed and a confirmation on the amount he would receive.
“Hey sis, can you ask Leonardo to give me some money? I’m a little short on funds.” He was always short on funds. He made sure of that.
“No Matthew.” I was tired of his antics.
“Come on, Claire. You know I wouldn’t be calling you if I didn’t really need it.”
Yes he would. He loved the idea of never having to worry about money. He felt no shame in asking for
it often.
“Matthew, I’m not supporting your gambling.” I say clearly, rolling my eyes as I listen to the same story I’ve heard every time.
“Claire, these guys don’t play around. I have to pay them. They’re not joking around.”
“They never are, Matthew, but I can’t just give you money everything you decide gambling is a good idea.” Which was every time he had a dollar bill in
his hand.
“You don’t want to help me?” This was a guilt trip. He did this pretty often as well.

“Matthew, you need to learn and the only way for you to do that is by making you pay your debts on your own.” I knew this wasn’t the end of this conversation.
“Well I’m at your door now and I need the money. I see your husband is home. And he’s with a woman, maybe I can just save you the trouble and ask him myself.”
Was Leo with Charlotte again?
“I’m not home but I’ll be there in just a minute. Please don’t ask or talk to Leonardo.”
I rush out of the door and hail a taxi. I needed to stop Matthew before he got the chance to ask Leo for any money. Having to cover his debts on my own was shameful enough.
