Chapter 14–Alice
“Answer, Dawsey!” Massimo growled, his chair sliding a little on the perfectly polished floor. as he moved even closer to her “I gave clear orders for you to stay in that fucking house and there you are, disobeying me again! Do you think I’m some kind of clown?!”
“No, I think you used to be a reasonable man, but you clearly aren’t anymore.” Alice replied If you accepted my mother’s proposal to get a wife out of convenience so you could keep her locked up, then maybe you should have bought a bird or something. I am not your property so you can dictate where I go and where I don’t go.

“Do you really want to challenge me?” is teeth gritted as those green eyes burned into hers ” You agreed to this marriage because of my money, so don’t act like you weren’t bought! I gave you my last name and that entire mansion, and now you belong to me!”
“Did I accept being bought? Is that what Kendra told you?!” she laughed contemptuously, not even having the strength to get angry “Of course she would do that. Not even in a situation like this could she say she forced her own daughter to marry Amber’s ex–fiance…..
“And how exactly did they force you to accept the terrible punishment of marrying a good–for
nothing like the?” It was his turn to laugh, cynical, but also full of bitterness “What could they take from you? Or are you going to tell me that someone as stubborn as you simply couldn’t go against her dear mother’s orders?”
“I’m not going to bother explaining this to you, since you’re clearly not willing to believe me.” She growled, hating the feeling of humiliation at knowing that Massimo truly believed she had been bought… And, perhaps, she really had been, since the only reason the two of them were in that situation was because the Bianchi mansion had looked for her the best alternative she had to give Millicent a dignified life “And I also know that an explanation doesn’t matter to you, but the only reason I came here was to visit my grandfather. He’s in one of the private rooms nearby and I didn’t want to leave him forever in the dark about my sudden marriage.”
“Do you really want to do emotional blackmail…?” he started to challenge her, but Alice quickly cut him off.
“You can go there with me and confirm this with him if you want. After all, now that I no longer have to rush back to the mansion, acting like I’m your prisoner, I’m free to spend more time with him.” Alice glared at him “But please, enjoy the opportunity and tell him how kind and welcoming you are being to his granddaughter and great–granddaughter. Oh, and also tell us about the revenge and marriage scheme you were involved in, alongside his daughter. Just now, he told me he was glad I married you. So let’s go! I’m sure my grandfather will love to know all the good intentions you had in making me your wife…
“Enough!” Massimo roared, this time looking not only furious, but also seeming genuinely affected by her words “Do you really want me to go out of my way to make your life hell, just because you don’t want to follow some damn rules?!”

“And what are you going to do? Cut the heat in my room? Leave me without water? Without food?” Even though a part of her was aching with the memories of what her life had been like living with Kendra these past few years, without her grandfather to protect her, Alice still straightened up, ready to face him “I don’t matter. Punish me however you want! But don’t you dare even raise your voice to my daughter again or I’ll tell you, Kendra, Amber and everyone else to fuck off and get out of that mansion right away! It doesn’t matter how much money you gave my mother, understand?”
“What do you
think I…?” he blinked in disbelief until something else seemed to catch his attention “And what the fuck do you have in your hand?”
Suddenly tense, only then did Alice realize that, in her excitement of talking to her grandfather and then trying to find him a new oxygen cylinder, she had forgotten that she was carrying the three small glass claws that the hospital pharmacist had given to her earlier, in a completely transparent bag whose straps had been wrapped around her wrist all that time.
“Didn’t you just go out to see your grandfather, like a good girl with pure intentions?” Massimo sneered “Or were there some purchases you wanted to make?”
“Shut up!” she growled, irritated “That’s not even your business, but that’s my daughter’s medicine! The pharmacist at this hospital is the only friend of my grandfather who agrees to produce the syrup in the exact measurements that Millicent needs! And what the hell were you doing here? This isn’t even the hospital where you were admitted…!”
“And how do you know where I was hospitalized?” Massimo narrowed his eyes, making her realize the mistake she had committed.
“Listen, I had an idea you would be seeing the same doctor as my grandfather. But if you’re here, it’s because you have an appointment to go to, right? Go there and I’ll continue visiting my grandfather in the meantime…” she offered, uncomfortable when she realized that, with Massimo or her mother, she was always trapped, like a chained dog, always needing to negotiate to get a second of freedom even “When your appointment is over, I will come home with you.” Alice hid the bag with Millie’s medicines, not wanting Massimo to look at them too much and end up noticing something “No hesitation or creating a scene. I just don’t want to leave the only true member of my family alone.”
“You…” the muscles in his jaw tensed, making Alice think he was ready to continue with that discussion, refusing to give in….
However, after a few seconds of silence, he just moved his chair back, a frown frozen on his face the entire way as he turned his back to her.

“I won’t wait a second for you.” He growled, quieter than she expected, but undoubtedly threatening “Then don’t challenge me again. If you’re not here in half an hour, you’ll have to go straight back to your mother’s house. And I don’t give a fuck if you came to me willingly c not.” Massimo’s hands froze on the rims that powered the wheels “You signed those fucking papers. You are my wife. And nothing will change that.”

“Anything you want.” Alice sighed, giving in to the feeling of defeat “And… If you want, you can visit my grandfather before we go. He would certainly be happy to see you. Although I think you already know that, even if you apparently haven’t even thought about paying a visit to the man who considered you a friend.” She needed to speak, even though it might cause a new fight “Don’t abandon him now, just because he’s no longer useful in your war for the position of CEO of the Bianchi multinational.
More than ever, her words seemed to reach something inside Massimo. However, again, he seemed to refuse to turn towards her, preferring to move forward, away from her while grunting.
“Tell Lucas I sent my best wishes for his recovery. I will visit him when my condition has improved. But do not worry. He knows better than anyone that my father raised me to be a man who honors the Bianchi family name. And a Bianchi never abandons a friend.” His voice became more acidic and deeper, suddenly “But we are also never merciful to anyone who crosses our limits. Maybe you should keep that in mind, wife.”
