Chapter 9
But to Ethan, it was always a waste of time.
Eventually, he got so annoyed that he grudgingly agreed.
“Fine,” he’d said flatly.
When he finally said yes, I was so happy I could’ve jumped for joy.
But in the three years we were together, we never went. Not once.
Every single time, he canceled on me for the sake of his experiments.
And now, here he was, bringing it up.
I couldn’t help but laugh bitterly.
“Ethan, you canceled every single time.”
He didn’t respond. The line was silent.
I hung up and blocked his number.
To me, a proper ex was someone who might as well be dead.
I saw Ethan again two weeks later.
By then, I’d been abroad for two years.
I was leaving my professor’s office when I bumped into someone, knocking the books out of their
hands.
“Sorry about that,” I said, bending down to pick them up.
When I stood, I looked up–and there he was. Ethan.
Two years had passed, yet he looked the same.
Though maybe there was something different about him–something I couldn’t quite place.
Feigning composure, I handed him his books.

But inside, I was fuming.
Of all people to run into, of course, it had to be him.
What were the odds?
Our fingers brushed for a moment, and I quickly pulled away like I’d been shocked.
I turned to leave, but he grabbed my wrist.
“Holly.”
I tried to yank my arm free, but his grip tightened.
His eyes bored into mine, a mix of desperation and sorrow.
“I’ve missed you so much.”
His intensity made my skin crawl.
“Let go of me,” I said coldly.
“I won’t.” His voice was steady, almost pleading.
He pulled me into his arms, resting his head against my neck.
“Please, Holly. Can we just talk?”
We ended up sitting across from each other at a coffee shop near the university.
“Why did you leave me?”
Ethan asked, his voice trembling as he stared at me.
Why had I left?
I’d asked myself that question countless times.
Maybe it was because loving him had been exhausting.
Maybe I finally realized there was no point in staying.
“I left because I was tired,” I said, taking a sip of my coffee.

He dropped his head, his hands trembling slightly.
“I thought you were joking,” he said quietly.
“I didn’t think you’d really leave. I asked everyone where you went, but no one would tell me. I
called you so many times, but you never picked up.”
He hesitated, his voice breaking.
“When I finally got your number, I was so happy-”
“Ethan,” I interrupted, cutting him off sharply.
“What are you trying to say?”
