Chapter 5
I’ve always had a knack for design.
My mentor, Professor Grant, really believed in me.
He’d invited me to study abroad with him several times.
If I went, it could open so many doors for my career.
But as my best friend bluntly put it, I was a hopeless romantic.
I couldn’t bear to leave Ethan.
I didn’t trust myself to handle a long–distance relationship.
“Does that make me useless?”
I asked, setting down the spoon I’d been using to stir the soup.
There was a long sigh on the other end of the line.
“Not really. It’s not your fault Ethan’s so damn charming. Any girl would lose her head over him.”
I carried the soup I’d made for Ethan and headed toward his lab.
On the stairs, I bumped into Lila.
She stepped in front of me, blocking my way.
“Hey, you’re bringing Ethan dinner?” she asked.
“Yeah,” I replied curtly.
“Well, give it to me. He’s working on an experiment. Don’t disturb him.”
I shook my head, refusing.
But before I knew it, she reached for the container, trying to grab it.
In the next moment, she let out a gasp, lost her balance, and tumbled down the stairs, drawing a
crowd of onlookers.

Chapter 5
In the nurse’s office, Lila was crying as the nurse treated her injuries.
The faculty advisor stormed in and glared at me.
“Why did you push her? Don’t you realize that’s assault? That’s illegal!”
“I didn’t push her,” I said firmly.
“You totally did!” Lila sobbed, pointing an accusatory finger at me.
“You’re just jealous because I get to work on experiments with Ethan!”
The advisor’s expression darkened as he demanded, “Apologize to her right now.”
I held my ground, my gaze unwavering.
“Why should I? I didn’t push her.”
Lila’s face twisted with frustration.
“There were witnesses! People saw me fall. Stop lying.”
Out of the corner of my eye, I spotted Ethan standing outside the door.
He looked at me with that same detached, lofty expression.
His silence was like a dagger to my heart.
I knew he wasn’t going to step in and defend me.
But deep down, I still hoped–just once–he’d take my side.
Just once.
I decided to report the incident to the police.
Let them handle it. I had nothing to hide.
When I got back to the apartment, Ethan was busy typing up a report, completely unfazed.
I couldn’t help myself.
“Why didn’t you stand up for me today?”

He stopped typing and looked at me.
“Would me defending you have proven your innocence?”
“No,” I admitted.
“Then why waste time?”
He shrugged and went back to his keyboard.
I lowered my gaze, my voice trembling with desperation.
Do you think I pushed her?”
Ethan sighed, clearly irritated.
“Does what I think even matter?”
It mattered. It mattered more than anything.
I didn’t care if anyone else believed me, as long as he did.
His indifference didn’t surprise me.
But hearing it out loud still crushed me.
