Chapter 14
Nathan was visibly alarmed and quickly tried to comfort me.
“Why are you crying? Isn’t this a good thing?”
He fumbled with some tissues, clumsily wiping away my tears.
Without thinking, I threw my arms around him.
Nathan froze for a second but then hugged me back tightly.
it of the corner of my eye, I caught sight of a pair of black sneakers by the doorway–I knew they belonged to Ethan.
After that, the tide of public opinion began to shift.
This time, the internet turned its fury on Lila.
People dug up her past scandals, aired out her dirty laundry, and even leaked her personal information.
Some went so far as to use her name to sell fabricated explicit photos.
The school issued her a serious disciplinary warning.
Rumors spread that the backlash took a heavy toll on her mental health.
She began acting erratically, and eventually, her family withdrew her from school and moved away to escape the fallout.
As for me, life went on as usual.
The only difference was that Ethan’s guest lectures were nearing their end.
That, I thought, was something worth celebrating–he’d soon disappear from my life for good.
I threw myself into finishing my design project, working long hours at the art studio every day.
Nathan took care of my meals, making sure I had a balanced diet of protein and vegetables.
One evening, Nathan couldn’t come to walk me home.

As I stepped out of the campus gate, Ethan appeared out of nowhere, cornering me against the wall.
“Holly, I need to talk to you,” he said, his arm pressing against the wall–right on top of my hair.
Pain shot through my scalp, and my eyes filled with tears.
Ethan noticed and quickly backed off, looking panicked.
“Did I hurt you?”
“What do you want?” I asked coldly.
“Holly, these past two years without you… I’ve been miserable.”
heard bits and pieces of gossip about him after I left.
People said he spent his days at Cupid’s Shrine, praying for the gods to rewrite our fate.
They even claimed his knees were bruised from kneeling so much.
Back then, I felt a twinge of pity for him, scolding him in my mind for not taking better care of
himself.
“I kept waiting for you to come back,” he continued.
“But all I got was news that you’d gone abroad.”
“Even then, I convinced myself that it was just because of the distance–you couldn’t come back
because it was too far.”
“I looked at the photos you left behind, and I hated myself for how few there were. Even the few pictures we had together… I wasn’t willing to take them at the time.”
“I went to everyone I knew, trying to get your phone number. And the day I finally called you, I planned everything I wanted to say.”
“But when I heard your voice… I didn’t know what to say anymore.”
“I know you always wanted to see the sunflowers in the countryside. I kept hoping you’d come back
for them.”
