Chapter 11
Chapter 11
Ethan stood there, stunned.
“You don’t like flowers?”
“I don’t like roses,” I repeated, looking back at my design.
“And I don’t like you.”
After running errands, I came home with groceries, ready to treat myself to some homemade soup.
At the door, I saw a tall figure waiting, holding several large bags.
Ethan grinned when he saw me, lifting the bags.
“I bought some ingredients. Let me cook for you.”
I raised an eyebrow.
Ethan?
Cooking?
The last time I asked him to make rice, he left it half–raw after an hour.
When did he learn how to cook?
Unable to argue, I reluctantly opened the door.
He walked in like he owned the place, heading straight for the kitchen.
Despite my attempts to help, he waved me off.
I’d been so busy with my design competition that I hadn’t rested properly in days.
I lay down on the couch, watching him move around the kitchen until I drifted off.
When I woke, I felt a hand brushing against my face.
I opened my eyes to find Ethan crouched beside me, his handsome face inches from mine, his gaze soft and a little melancholy.

His breath was warm against my skin, the proximity unnerving.
In the past, this would’ve left me blushing and breathless.
But now, I felt nothing. I calmly swatted his hand away.
“Is it ready?”
Looking disappointed, he stood and walked back to the kitchen, returning with a bowl of porridge.
He pulled out a chair for me like a gentleman.
“Try it. Let me know what you think.”
He sat across from me, watching expectantly as I ate.
After a few bites, I looked at him and said, “It’s getting late. You should leave.”
His head dropped, and after a moment, he spoke, his voice almost pleading.
“I’ll change. I’ll learn how to love someone. Just don’t push me away, okay?”
I sighed.
“Do you think this is worth it?”
He stared at me, confused.
“Back then, I cared for you. I paid attention to everything–your meals, your clothes. I worried about
your
comfort.”
“And what did I get in return? Did you ever change, even a little? Did you ever give anything back?”
“I wanted your attention, your care, your support. You gave me none of those. So why should I give
you another chance now?”
“I can support myself, build a full life, and find happiness.”
“But when I was with you, I became this hollow shell, filled with negativity and self–doubt.”
“I kept thinking I wasn’t good enough, so I bent over backward trying to make you happy.”
“But in the end, I realized I didn’t matter to you. And when I stopped caring, that hollow shell broke
apart.”

Ethan wouldn’t even let me wait for him.
When it rained, other boyfriends brought umbrellas,
I was always the one bringing one to him.
I don’t know what I was thinking, loving him for so long,
Maybe I had a masochistic streak.
Or maybe it was because I’d never been loved.
I was the middle child, always overlooked.
My older brother was the heir, and my younger sister charmed everyone with her sweetness.
Growing up, I was insecure and sensitive.
So when Ethan smiled at me, I couldn’t let go.
But after being hurt so many times, I finally walked away.
Time softened everything
Ethan was now just a vague figure in my mind.
The feelings I once had were gone, replaced by indifference.
That’s why I could say all this to him now.
Ethan’s eyes reddened as I spoke.

“I know I messed up. I-”
The doorbell interrupted him.
It was Nathan, holding a stack of books.
“Hey, Holly! I got those design books you wanted!” he said, stepping inside without hesitation.
Nathan noticed Ethan and gave me a questioning look.
“He was just leaving,” I said.
Ethan’s hopeful expression crumbled.
I pulled Nathan into the study to discuss the competition, ignoring the smirk Nathan threw Ethan’s way as we passed.
By the time we came out, Ethan was gone.
