The voice behind Charmaine was icy, sending a chill down her spine. In an instant, her confident smirk faded, her expression frozen in place.
For a few seconds, she stood there, as if her mind had gone blank, like a machine that had suddenly malfunctioned. Slowly, she turned around, her movements sluggish, like someone struggling to regain control.
Without her noticing, a group had gathered behind her: Emyr, his gaze so intense it seemed like it could pierce right through her; Kane, wearing an amused expression, clearly enjoying the situation; Keon, looking calm and unruffled as always; Daniel, who seemed irritated and dissatisfied; and a few other unfamiliar faces–servers and wealthy heirs, all staring at her with curiosity as if she were the subject of some grand spectacle.
Charmaine stood there, frozen, her mind racing. Why is the universe doing this to me? Do they have to all show up
at once?
Emyr’s face was unreadable as he spoke again, his tone flat, “You said there was more. Why did you stop talking?”
Charmaine gathered whatever courage she had left and forced a smile, but it was stiff and uncomfortable, barely passing for a grin. “Th–there’s nothing more,” she mumbled, her voice barely audible.
Emyr raised an eyebrow. “You were talking non–stop earlier. Now, you’re silent?”
Charmaine quickly dropped her gaze, realizing she had no way out of this. The only option left was to make a swift exit. “Mr. Emyr, I’m sorry,” she said, her voice lowered.
Kane opened his mouth, but Emyr’s sharp look stopped him. Kane quickly swallowed his words. “Ahem, what exactly are you apologizing for?”
Charmaine, following Kane’s cue, lowered her head and apologized, “I shouldn’t have made jokes about Mr. Emyr. I realize now it was wrong.”
Freya, clearly irked, stepped forward, her voice dripping with indignation. “This can’t just go unpunished! How dare she spread lies about Mr. Emyr? If someone with bad intentions had overheard, it would have ruined the Crosses‘ reputation!”
Charmaine scratched her nose and muttered under her breath, “I was just trying to mess with you. Who would announce those kind of things to the world?”
Freya glared at her with fury. “You little … ”
Emyr, his hand gripping the armrest tightly, his veins standing out from the tension, exhaled sharply and then released his hold. “Take me back.”
Realizing what was happening, Charmaine nodded quickly and adopted a more accommodating tone, “Of course, Mr. Emyr.”
The others watched in surprise, not expecting the situation to unfold so smoothly. Charmaine and Emyr made their way to the private room.
Chaun hlinked in dichlief “Inet like that it’s over?”

Sinnova exchanged a glance with Tad. “Did Emyr tell you to get rid of that little maid?”
Kane chuckled, clearly amused. “Don’t worry, Shawn, Sinnova. Emyr won’t do anything to her…”
“Why? I’ve never seen Emyr this angry, yet he held it back… does that mean they have actually-
“It’s impossible! Emyr would never fall for someone like her!”

Freya interrupted sharply, her tone defensive. Shawn and Sinnova shared a brief look, then fell silent, understanding each other without a word.
They didn’t want to upset Freya, who was clearly on edge and might become a troubling issue.
Once they were alone, Charmaine spoke hesitantly, “Mr. Emyr, why did you all come over …”
Emyr glanced at her, his eyes unreadable. “Why do you think?”
Charmaine was at a loss. How would I know?
There were still a few people in the room. Charmaine looked up and met Veronica’s gaze. Veronica was sitting off to the side, clearly tense and uneasy.
Charmaine looked away and calmly helped Emyr settle into his seat. Veronica, however, seemed like she might explode with anxiety.
Earlier, during dinner, Keon had casually mentioned rescuing a girl who’d been harassed by some thugs, and some of his friends had made jokes about it. Emyr ignore him most of the way.
But when Keon mentioned the girl’s name, Emyr had immediately stood up and left …
Veronica clenched her fists as she thought back to that moment.
I can’t let Charmaine stay near Emyr any longer.
The others filed in and took their seats.
Freya entered last, looking displeased. There was an empty spot next to Emyr, while everyone else sat far away at the other end of the room.
The three other girls, sensing the tension, quietly took their seats in the corner. As Freya walked toward Emyr’s side, she was about to sit when he suddenly spoke, “How long are you going to stand?”
Freya froze, caught in an awkward half–sitting position.
Charmaine, feeling the weight of everyone’s stares, finally spoke up, “It’s fine. I’m not hungry.”
Emyr, in his usual straightforward manner, responded, “I am. Sit down and serve me.”
