Alessa scoffed and immediately declared, “Mr. Read, this is your family matter, and I won’t interfere. But… since this elderly woman is in Eragos, our association will not stand idly by!”
Weston’s face lit up with joy, “Thank you, Mrs. Alessa! I knew you were a kind–hearted person. Thank you for helping my great–aunt!”
“Mrs. Alessa, this isn’t appropriate!”
“Oh? Mr. Read, you won’t take care of her, and you’re not letting me lend a helping hand to an old friend either?” Alessa’s voice was firm.
She turned to Weston. “Young man, leave me the address and phone number. I’ll have someone personally check on the elderly woman’s condition. If money is needed for treatment, I will cover it.”
Bennett and Sophie were horrified.
Weston’s family had always been poor and lived in the countryside. Whenever they tried borrowing money from him, Bennett never agreed. If Weston were allowed to get close to Mrs. Alessa, who knew what kind of gossip he would spread behind their backs?
What if he said something he shouldn’t have?
Cold sweat trickled down Bennett’s back.
He quickly positioned himself in front of Weston and pleaded with a sycophantic smile, “Mrs. Alessa, there’s no need to trouble you with my family affairs. I swear in front of everyone here today that as long as I can still earn money, I will take care of my mother. No matter how much it costs, I’ll buy the most expensive -medication for her. I won’t hesitate. If I break this promise …
“Then may the heavens strike you down with lightning!” Weston cut him off sharply from behind.
Bennett’s face stiffened.
Weston pressed impatiently, “Go on, say it!”
Grinding his teeth, Bennett forced the words out, “If I break this promise, may the heavens strike me down with lightning!”
“Good!” Alessa was the first to respond. “Mr. Read, since you’ve made this promise, I trust you’ll keep your
word.”
“Sure, Mrs. Alessa. You can count on it … ” Bennett hurriedly wiped the cold sweat from his cheeks.
Weston scoffed at Bennett, his tone dripping with disdain. “You’d better stick to it, Bennett. If my great–aunt doesn’t live a long and happy life, it’ll be all on you!”
If it weren’t for the formal setting, Bennett would’ve lashed out at Weston right then and there.
This disgraceful fool had humiliated me in such a grand setting!
No–Charmaine is the real culprit!
I will not let her off the hook!

Not far away, Leah had returned to the venue after tending to her injuries. She had changed into a more subdued outfit and was now watching the chaos unfold around Bennett and Sophie.
She clenched her jaw so hard she thought her teeth might crack.
“Hah, just a mere maid flaunting her connections with Emyr. Who does she think she is?”
A sharp, disdainful voice came from behind her. Leah turned to see a stylishly dressed woman glaring in Charmaine’s direction with visible contempt.
Raising an eyebrow, Leah walked toward her.
“Miss, do you know Mr. Emyr?”
“Who are you?” Freya’s gaze sharpened as Leah approached her proactively. She scanned Leah up and down before a sudden realization dawned upon her. “Oh, you’re Leah from the Nelsons?”
Leah blinked in surprise “You know me?”
“The Nelsons are a well–known name in Eragos, and besides, you’re a patient of my junior. I’m Freya, from the Whites of Seaville.”
“Is your junior Dr. Zimmer?”
“Yes, that’s him.”
Leah brightened. “What a small world, Ms. White! I couldn’t help but overhear you mention a maid … Were you talking about Charmaine?”
“Who else could it be?” Freya’s delicate features contorted with resentment at the mention of Charmaine. “She’s just a mere maid at Emyr’s house, and yet, she dares to throw her weight around outside, acting all high and mighty. If it weren’t for Emyr’s overprotectiveness, she wouldn’t have a place to show off!”
“Is that so…” Leah nodded slowly, her earlier frustration melting away.
No wonder…
She had racked her brain trying to figure out why Charmaine had managed to earn Emyr’s favor.
So this was the truth. After leaving the Nelsons, Charmaine became a maid for the Crosses, doing the same servile work she had always enjoyed back when she lived with the Reads and the Nelsons.
Emyr, with his moody and fiercely protective nature, was likely only helping her to avoid tarnishing the Crosses‘ reputation.
The Crosses were unimaginably wealthy. That Maybach Leah had seen Charmaine riding in a few times might well have been just the maid’s car for grocery runs.
Leah chuckled to herself at the thought.
Suddenly, a thought struck her, and she reached up to touch the necklace around her neck.
