“You were the one who told Veronica and me to help you get rid of Charmaine! Now that we’re caught, you’re turning on me? Unbelievable, Leah. You’re nothing but a backstabbing snake!”
Leah shrank back into Olympia’s arms as her tears fell freely as if she were heartbroken. “Celeste, Veronica and I had no idea you would stoop so low. I know you’ve always disliked Charmaine and had always caused trouble for her, but to think you’d create such a scene at Mrs. Alessa’s birthday banquet … I’m so disappointed in you.”
Celeste was livid. She grabbed Veronica by the arm. “Say something, Veronica! You were there—you know Leah told us in the car to help her. Tell them!”
Veronica buried her face in her hands, sobbing uncontrollably. “I don’t know anything! I don’t know anything! Please stop!”
“Stop crying and tell the truth already!”
“Enough! Celeste, you stole Leah’s ring and framed Charmaine. The evidence is clear. Who are you trying to blame now?”
Daniel gestured to the security guards. “Take her to the police. Let them handle it.”
She laughed bitterly, looking at the two women who had betrayed her.
She suddenly lunged at Leah, grabbing her by the hair and slapping her across the face with all her strength.
“Ah!” Leah screamed.
“Leah!” Olympia cried out in alarm.
“Get her out of here!” Daniel barked.
Even as the guards dragged her away, Celeste continued to scream profanities.
Leah’s face was swollen on one side and her meticulously styled hair was completely ruined. She cried uncontrollably as she clutched her aching legs and face.
Willard, Olympia, and the Bennetts all wore expressions darker than a storm cloud. Willard seethed, “Leah treated Celeste so well, yet she harbored such malicious intent against her!”

Emyr’s sudden interjection made every one pause. His voice was calm but carried an undeniable authority. “Now that the truth is out, aren’t you guys going to apologize for wronging someone?”
The Nelsons‘ faces grew even uglier at his words.
Charmaine glanced at him in surprise and a strange, indescribable feeling rose in her chest.
From the beginning, this so–called “Satan” had been protecting her. The unhesitating support he showed her was something Charmaine had never experienced before.
Sensing Emyr’s intention, she decided to boldly play along. With a faint smile, she spoke, “I won’t push too hard. After all, the last time Ms. Leah apologized to me, she cried so pitifully. But as the saying goes, ‘if a child goes astray, the father is to blame.’ Since Mr. Nelson is here, perhaps you could set an example for your daughter?”

The upper–class guests, always hungry for gossip, were now watching with rapt attention. Many had already recognized Charmaine as one of the women featured in the Nelsons‘ official account not long ago.

Charmaine smiled lightly. “You apologized to me so many times, yet you keep coming back to provoke
me again and again. Don’t you think your apologies are losing their value?”
She turned her gaze back to Willard. “What’s your opinion, Mr. Nelson?”
“Charmaine, don’t go too far!” Olympia hissed a low warning from behind.
Emyr chuckled softly. “Mrs. Nelson, don’t you think you’re the one going too far?”
His words were a blatant show of favoritism, leaving no room for doubt.
Leah’s heart burned with frustration and humiliation. The last time she had encountered Emyr, he had mocked her mercilessly.
She wouldn’t understand how could a man like him–proud, cruel, and unpredictable–be so fiercely protective of Charmaine.
