Charmaine awoke, the sunlight pouring through the window and nudging her from sleep.
She squinted, instinctively raising her hand to block the brightness.
Once her eyes adjusted, she sat up, still feeling a bit groggy.
The room, large and elegant, was empty. Emyr, the one who should’ve been there, was nowhere to be found.
Had he used her and just left without a word?
“Typical,” she muttered under her breath.
But then, as the thought settled in, something else hit her.
Hadn’t she done the same thing not too long ago?
Great. The so–called villain was just as bad as she was.
Shaking off the thoughts, she stood and opened the door, intending to return to her room for some quiet time.
But there, standing outside, was Alfred.
They both paused, caught off guard by the unexpected meeting.
Alfred was the first to break the silence, offering a wide smile. “Ms. Nelson, you’re awake! How are you feeling?”
“Uh, Alfred, I think you’ve got the wrong person,” she said, her brow furrowed.
If anyone should’ve been unwell, it was Emyr, not her.
Alfred quickly cleared his throat, his demeanor shifting to one of genuine respect and appreciation. “Thanks to you, Ms. Nelson. Mr. Emyr made it through the night without any problems. We really appreciate what you did.”
“There’s no need for thanks. It’s what I should’ve done.” She hesitated before continuing, “But you might want to think ahead next time. If something like this happens again, it could be worse.”
It was hard to imagine how a man as strong, as proud as Emyr, had broken down so easily after just ten minutes of pain.
Charmaine couldn’t fathom how he had survived similar episodes before. She also wondered, though, if in her past life, Emyr had ever been given a chance to heal that leg injury.
What if he never did?
A dark thought crossed her mind, and she lowered her gaze.
“The painkillers in the manor have all been dealt with,” Alfred continued, “and Tad arranged for ten generators to keep Mr. Emyr’s medicine frozen. Everything’s under control.”

“Of course, Ms. Nelson. Please get some rest. Mr. Emyr has already left for the company, but before he left, he asked me to remind you to take it easy for the next few days.”
Charmaine exhaled deeply, a small sense of satisfaction rising within her. At least Emyr had shown some thoughtfulness.
After spending an uncomfortable night wrapped in his damp arms, she felt sticky and out of place.
She jumped into the shower and, once she emerged, saw a new message from Rex waiting for her.
Rex had picked up the task from the dark web that Tad had assigned, asking if Charmaine needed any help.
With little hesitation, Charmaine typed back, “I’ll take care of it.”
She opened her laptop, entered her password, and logged into her dark web account. In her inbox was the video Rex had sent.
It was footage from a camera Charmaine herself had destroyed. Trying to restore it seemed impossible.
But, without pause, Charmaine opened the corrupted video and started typing with quick, deliberate
movements.
In half an hour, the video was compressed and sent out via email.
With that task out of the way, Charmaine finally allowed herself to relax. She sank onto her bed, closing her eyes and letting out a long breath, grateful to have a moment to unwind.
Cross Group.
CEO’s office.
Emyr sat at his desk, his eyes scanning a multi–million–dollar contract, though his mind felt a million miles away. Ten minutes passed, and not a single word of the contract had sunk in.
Tad stepped forward, clearing his throat softly. “Mr. Emyr, the hospital surveillance footage has been restored.”
Emyr glanced at him, his eyes unfocused. Without a word, Tad handed over a tablet.
The footage picked up from where Robin had entered the hallway, just before the video cut out.
Restored, the video clearly showed Robin walking into the corridor.
He shed his black jacket, revealing a nurse’s uniform underneath.
Still masked, Robin turned a corner, vanishing into the crowded elevator area. He blended effortlessly with the others, indistinguishable from the rest of the nurses.
The restoration was perfect, but ultimately, it was pointless.
Emyr rewound the footage and watched it twice before looking up at Tad. “Is this reliable?”
Tad nodded. “The task was handled by the top hacker on the dark web, ‘YouToothpick.”

Emyr raised an eyebrow, his expression unreadable. “That’s an unusual ID.”

Emyr’s expression softened slightly. “No need to investigate further. Let Charmaine take a crack at it.”
Tad nodded. “Of course.”
There was a long pause before Tad spoke again. “Mr. Emyr, do you really think Ms. Nelson can fix your leg?”
Emyr’s eyes darkened, his voice low. “I don’t know.”
Tad hesitated, unsure of how to continue. “And if she can’t?”
