Back to My Worst Birthday and Starting Anew
Chapter 49 Aloof Guy
Emyr’s gaze lingered on her so–called innocent face. “You’re not fooling anyone.”

Charmaine cleared her throat, her voice deliberately casual. “With me here, Mr. Emyr, you don’t need anyone else to take care of your leg. I can handle it. Trust me–I’m practically a miracle worker.”
His laugh was short and cutting, his tone as cold as winter wind. “If I left it to you, I’d end up in a coffin. You’d probably have to crawl in after me just to keep paying for your mistakes.”
Charmaine stared at him, momentarily stunned. “Excuse me?”
That one hit hard.
This man had a tongue like a razor, sharp enough to slice through stone.
Even Tad, seated up front, couldn’t hide his shock.
He had long known that Emyr’s words could be lethal, especially when his mood darkened. But this?
To suggest Ms. Nelson would accompany him to the grave?
It almost felt like there was something more beneath those words.
If Charmaine had the faintest idea what Tad was thinking, her temper would have ignited like dry kindling.
When they returned to the villa, Charmaine’s phone buzzed with a new message. Rex had sent her a screenshot.
Emyr had placed a bounty of 300 million dollars to retrieve the missing surveillance footage.
Charmaine stared at the amount, her lips curving into a dry smile. She recalled how Jonah had once offered a mere hundred million to secure Leah a kidney. Compared to this, that offer seemed laughable.
Without hesitation, she sent a message to Rex, instructing him to take the job and finish it within three days.
As the night deepened, Charmaine waited patiently until Emyr emerged from his study.
Then she stepped forward to intercept him.
He gave her a wary look, his expression unreadable. “What do you want now?”
She stood her ground. “It’s about your leg. We’ve wasted enough time. Let’s get started tonight.”
Her initial plan had been to wait until his condition worsened, thinking it would be easier to act then. But seeing how much he cared, even as he tried to hide it, made her reconsider.
This was Emyr, after all–a man who had once been the epitome of confidence and pride.
His first instinct was to refuse, but when he looked into her eyes, he hesitated. There was something unrelenting in her gaze, a determination she couldn’t conceal.
His jaw tightened, and the words he meant to say shifted as they reached his lips. “To the bedroom.”
“Great!”

Charmaine barely contained her surprise. She’d braced herself for another scathing remark, not a reluctant agreement. Her smile widened, lighting up her face.
Could she really be that excited to help him?
Emyr wheeled himself toward the room, his movements steady, while Charmaine’s footsteps trailed behind, light but determined.
Unseen by him, a small smile crept at the edge of his lips.
Charmaine grabbed a small stool and placed it carefully in front of him, settling herself into it with ease.
She reached for his ankle, but as her fingers brushed near it, the wheelchair slid backward unexpectedly.
Emyr’s brow furrowed. “What are you doing?”
Charmaine kept her voice calm, though a hint of amusement lingered in her tone. “I’m following the principles of holistic medicine–‘look, listen, ask, and feel. To treat you properly, To treat you properly, I need to examine your leg first.”
He responded sharply. “Just do it. There’s no need for all that.”
Charmaine’s patience thinned.
“What, do you think I haven’t seen enough of you already? Are you afraid I’ll take advantage of you?”
She stuck her tongue out playfully, but in truth, she knew she had stretched the truth.
Though they had shared a deeply intimate moment, that night had been dark, and with the help of the medicine, she had never truly seen him.
“Charmaine!”
Before he could say anything else, Charmaine shifted the stool closer and decisively rolled up his pant leg.
Oh man, his legs are so, so fair…
They were long, slender, and well–defined, but the muscles beneath had clearly suffered from months of disuse in the wheelchair.
Emyr hadn’t expected her to act so boldly.
His gaze turned intense, and for a moment, it seemed like a storm of emotions passed through him.
“Charmaine!”
He leaned forward, his hand locking around her wrist with a strength that sent a jolt through her.
Before he could speak, Charmaine acted first.
“If you don’t want me to treat your leg, dyou’re really going to take me to the grave with you.”
Emyr said nothing.
Emyr’s grip loosened, his face darkening further.

His teeth clenched.
“Touch what you shouldn’t, and you’ll regret it.”
Charmaine’s lips curled slightly.
Did he really think she was some kind of wild animal for making one small mistake?
Knowing her position, Charmaine wisely decided to drop the verbal back–and–forth.
She carefully stretched his foot out, then pressed a pressure point gently on his ankle.
Her focus was split, watching for his reaction while she worked.
