After the call ended, Charmaine let out a big sigh. “Oh my gosh!”
Emyr laughed at how tense she looked.
“You’re usually so brave. You’ve met her before, so why are you acting so nervous now?”
“This time is different! It felt like meeting my boyfriend’s parents for the first time!”
Emyr poked her nose. “Yup, like a not–so–pretty bride meeting her in–laws.”
Charmaine frowned and pinched his cheek. “Excuse me? You’re the one who’s not good–looking!”

Up front, the driver and Tad glanced at each other and turned their heads away, pretending not to hear the couple’s playful argument.
That attractive pair clearly didn’t care about who was watching.
For the rest of the trip, Charmaine tagged along with Celeste and enjoyed herself. On the final leg home, she fell fast asleep on the plane.
When their private jet landed, Keon and the others were picked up by their assistants.
Charmaine gave Celeste a hand with her three oversized suitcases as they stepped off the plane.
Celeste tried to wave her off. “No need to walk me out. My cousin’s coming.”
“Your cousin?”
“Yeah, my uncle’s daughter–Erin.”
Right then, Celeste spotted a girl in a hoodie and jeans not far away and waved. “Erin!”
She introduced them effortlessly. “This is my good friend Charmaine. And Charmaine, this is Erin.”
“Hello.” Charmaine waved as Erin came closer.
Erin glanced at Charmaine briefly and responded, “Hi, Charmaine. Let’s go, Celeste. The parking lot is packed during the New Year. If we don’t leave now, we’ll be stuck.”
“Alright, coming!” Celeste gave Charmaine a quick wave before hurrying off,
As Charmaine turned to go, she couldn’t shake the feeling that Erin had looked at her a bit coldly.
Still, she brushed it off and soon found Emyr in the parking area, and the two of them exited easily through

Charmaine handed out the local treats she brought back, then went upstairs to check on the kittens.
To her surprise, the little ones had grown round and plump in just a few days.
She hadn’t noticed in the videos, but holding them now, they felt way heavier.
Pets raised by the elderly were always treated like little piglets–Alfred included.
Over the next two days, Charmaine kept busy tidying up the kittens‘ room and whipping up a special New Year’s Eve meal in the kitchen for Basil and the others.
After a packed schedule, New Year’s Eve finally rolled around.
That morning, still sleepy and rubbing her eyes, Charmaine unlocked her phone–and froze.
“What the heck! Are you nuts, Emyr?”
He had sent her eight separate transfers of 50,000 dollars early in the morning!
She blinked a few times, thinking she might be hallucinating. She seriously thought he’d lost it.

Charmaine reached over and pulled out a check–with a jaw–dropping ten million written on it.
She gasped, totally stunned, momentarily forgetting how to react.
Then came another voice message. “There’s a transfer limit. It’s all yours–Happy New Year.”
She had always liked his voice, but this time, it sounded especially sweet.
Without hesitation, she accepted the gift and sent a string of cute ‘thank you, boss‘ emojis.
Just as Charmaine was soaking in her joy, Sylvia’s profile popped up on her screen.
Sure enough, generous minds think alike–her first message was a ten–million–dollar transfer.
Then came her voice message. “Charmaine, Emyr told me you used your savings to buy that necklace for me. This is my New Year’s gift to you. Take it.”
Charmaine didn’t dare accept and was thinking of a polite way to decline until Sylvia’s next voice message made any refusal impossible.
