Charmaine spoke in a quiet tone. “I’ve been assigned something urgent. The collaboration with your son will have to be postponed for now.”
She let her words hang in the air for a moment, her gaze shifting toward Leah. Mr. Stuman, catching her drift, quickly stepped forward to offer an explanation.
Before anyone could respond, Sophie was the first to voice her concern. “No, this isn’t happening.”
The room fell silent as all eyes turned to her. Sophie quickly added, “Leah’s health has always been delicate. We don’t need the money, and this technique isn’t fully proven. How could we risk her life?”
Her thoughts spun in confusion.
How could Leah possibly go through with this? She wasn’t even sick.
The only reason she needed a transplant was to try and benefit from Charmaine’s supposed luck.
“Exactly,” Olympia chimed in, her tone supportive of Sophie’s words.
“Perhaps this opportunity should go to someone with a greater need.”
The hidden message was clear: Let Charmaine focus on those in need, the ones who could not afford treatment. The Nelsons didn’t face such struggles.
Under her mask, Charmaine’s lips curled into a small smile. “This experiment won’t harm the patient. Right now, Ms. Leah is the perfect candidate. Since you’re looking for a kidney anyway, why not take the chance? Wouldn’t you want Ms. Nelson to recover as soon as possible?”
Her voice dropped into a whisper. “If everything goes smoothly, I could finish the task sooner, and that would allow me to start the collaboration with your son earlier. It’s a win–win, don’t you think?”
Olympia hesitated, her resolve faltering with Charmaine’s words.
Zayn had always been passionate about medicine. When he first heard about the chance to work with Robin, he was more excited than when he got into his dream school. He stayed up for days, barely sleeping, working on reports.
After the collaboration fell through, he locked himself in his lab, refusing to leave. Olympia, seeing her son so affected, couldn’t help but feel for him.
Leah, noticing Olympia’s change in expression, cursed Robin in her mind. She quickly put on a pitiful look and said, “Mom, Mr. Robin’s been Zayn’s idol for the longest time. If agreeing to this experiment could bring Zayn into the collaboration, I’m more than happy to do it.”
Olympia felt a weight lift off her shoulders, but Leah’s next words made her pause.
“I’m willing to do anything for Zayn. But I’ve heard him say time and again that caution is of utmost importance in medicine. Even the smallest mistake can lead to disastrous consequences …
”
Leah bit her lip. “Mr. Robin, are you absolutely certain I’m the right fit for this experiment? There’s no risk involved? No chance of failure?”
Charmaine smiled knowingly. She had anticipated Leah’s doubts.

“Ms. Nelson, I assure you, I wouldn’t rush into anything. Let’s do this: We’ll go downstairs for a full check- up, and we’ll make sure you meet the necessary criteria.”
Lorenzo, who had been silent until now, spoke up. “Don’t worry. I’ll stay with Ms. Nelson for the entire check–up.”
Leah nodded, a hint of relief in her eyes. “Thank you, Dr. Zimmer.”
Olympia squeezed Leah’s hand, her voice filled with warmth. “Leah, seeing how much you care for Zayn makes me happy.”
Leah smiled softly. “We’re family. It’s nothing.”
Charmaine turned sharply, her eyes cold as she walked toward the door.
Family?
She scoffed silently.
After changing into her hospital gown, Leah entered the examination room, her steps hesitant yet steady.
Charmaine was about to follow when Lorenzo stepped in her path.. “No outsiders,” he said firmly. “You’re not on our staff, Professor Robin. I trust you know the rules?”
Charmaine simply smiled. “Of course.”
As the door closed slowly in front of her, her smile slipped away.
She moved to the far corner of the hallway, her steps light, and sat down.
From her bag, she pulled out her laptop, opening it with quick, practiced motions.
Her fingers hovered above the keys before they flew across the keyboard. The screen flickered to life, revealing a live feed from the examination room.
The camera positioned perfectly in the corner of the room broadcasted the scene.
Charmaine’s eyes narrowed as she focused on the kidney scan of Leah, her expression unreadable.
Outside, a Maybach rolled to a smooth stop in the hospital parking lot.
The door opened, and from within, Emyr, sitting in a mechanical wheelchair, began to move forward, his movements controlled and effortless. Tad followed closely behind, glancing at him. “Robin’s in nephrology,”
he said, voice low.
Emyr gave a slight nod, his chin lifting just enough to acknowledge the comment. They walked toward the elevators, and Tad, with swift fingers, pressed the “up” buttons on all eight elevators.
Despite their status, Emyr didn’t take the shortcut. They waited their turn, like everyone else.
Meanwhile, in the nephrology department…
