Maxwell’s expression darkened for a moment. “No need.”
He calmly raised his paddle again. “Five million.”
The new price drew gasps from the crowd.
The auctioneer called out with excitement, “Bidder 38 offers five million–going once!”
All eyes turned to Charmaine. She stared straight ahead, not reacting at all.
“Going twice!”
Leah’s hands tightened. She still didn’t take her eyes off Charmaine.
The whole room went quiet.
Charmaine didn’t bid again. Even the mysterious VIP Bidder 1 gave up.
“Third and final call!”
The auctioneer dropped the gavel. “Sold! Congratulations to bidder 38 on winning the Southglow Pearl Necklace!”
Leah finally relaxed and smiled. “Maxwell, we did it!”
Maxwell gave a small nod, his expression easing a bit.
Liam grinned. “Only you could pay that much. She never stood a chance.”
Veronica added smugly, “Even with Mr. Emyr supporting her, there’s no way she’d pay that much money.”
While they celebrated, confusion spread in the VIP room.
“Emyr, why didn’t you let Tad make a bid?”
Kane looked confused when Leah’s group got the pearl necklace.
It was just five million–something Emyr could easily cover.
Emyr stayed calm. “No need. She was never planning to buy it.”
