Then, a thought crossed her mind, and her eyes narrowed. “What about Sophie? You should ask her whether the plan failed. I took Charmaine’s luck away, so why hasn’t she started facing misfortune yet?”
Leah couldn’t bear the thought of it. How could someone as insignificant as Charmaine still walk freely beside Emyr, unaffected and living as if nothing were wrong?
If it weren’t for Emyr, what reason would she have to stand up to me?
Bennett sighed heavily, clearly unsure of what to say. “Your Grandpa always believed her luck was in her blood. No matter how much you take, she’ll keep getting lucky. The only way to end it for good is a full blood exchange … or … ”
His voice dropped to a chilling whisper. “You could just let her die.”
A slow, calculating smile spread across Leah’s lips. “I’ll make her vanish. But before that, I might as well take whatever’s useful and make it work for me.”
After ending the call, Leah quickly touched up her makeup and left the restroom.
A few moments later, Charmaine emerged from the second–to–last stall, her face unreadable.
She washed her hands silently and walked out without saying a word.
The lighting in the hall had dimmed, and a waiting attendant with a small lamp guided Charmaine back to her seat.
Celeste, filled with anxiety, looked over Charmaine carefully. “Finally back, huh? Why didn’t you answer my calls? You told me not to go in. Did you and Leah get into it? Would my being there mess with your performance?”
Charmaine’s face remained neutral. “I didn’t confront her directly.”
Celeste let out a sigh of relief. “Good. The auction’s already started. The first two items were antique porcelain cups. Now they’re moving on to the jewelry.”
Charmaine nodded, her attention shifting back to the stage.
On stage, the auctioneer energetically introduced the next item. “Our third item is a Southglow Pearl Necklace, from the Southglow Ocean, with a diameter of seven inches. Each pearl is perfectly round, with a radiant luster… The opening bid is 500,000.”
The pearls caught the spotlight, their shimmer captivating everyone in the room. The crowd gasped in awe. Leah’s eyes sparkled as she admired the necklace. “Maxwell, this pearl necklace is stunning!”
This auction had originally been intended for Jonah, but due to his business commitments, Maxwell had

He raised his paddle, signaling a bid. “Five hundred and thirty thousand.”
The auctioneer acknowledged him. “Bidder 38, 530,000.”

Leah looked at Maxwell, surprised. Her face softened with gratitude. “Thank you, Maxwell. I do love it, but I think this would be more suitable for Grandma.”
Her smile faded slightly as she added, “The things online have really upset her. I want to buy her something nice to cheer her up.”
Maxwell paused for a moment. “It’s the thought that counts. Grandma’s just blunt; she doesn’t blame you.”
“I know,” Leah replied softly, her voice low. “But I still want to do something to make everyone happy.”
Maxwell’s heart softened as he watched her.
Despite all the online attacks she had faced, Leah was still putting on a brave face, thinking of her family. It made him even more determined to win the necklace for her.
The pearl necklace was clearly a favorite among the crowd, with several bidders vying for it.
However, as the price climbed to two million, the number of bidders began to dwindle.
Maxwell, determined, raised his paddle again. “Two point two million.”
The auctioneer called out, “Two point two million going once. Any other bids?”
Leah was taken aback, surprised that Maxwell had kept bidding. She gently tugged at his sleeve. “Maxwell, don’t you think it’s too much?”
She hesitated, looking a bit troubled as she added, “I’ve already bought a few things for the family, and I don’t have much left. Would it be okay if I pay you back next time?”
“Don’t worry about it,” Maxwell said with a smile. “It’s a gift for you.”
“Maxwell… you’re so good to me,” Leah whispered, deeply touched by his kindness.
Maxwell lightly patted her shoulder. “Seeing you get back to your old self makes it all worth it. No price is too high.”
Veronica, standing off to the side, couldn’t help but feel envious. Her face clearly showed how much she longed for a brother like Maxwell.
She couldn’t resist adding, her voice laced with sarcasm, “Leah, your brother’s so good to you. I wish I had a
brother like him!”
Leah smiled faintly at the comment, feeling a surge of pride.
Across the room, Charmaine watched as Leah continued to push the price higher for the pearls. Celeste crossed her arms, clicking her tongue in disbelief. “I bet Leah sweet–talked Maxwell into bidding more. Honestly, he’s really splurging–over two million already!”
