That’s the only reason Maxwell came by himself
Maxwell’s eyes narrowed sharply.
Just one sentence had made everything clear–she was aware of his connection to Liam.

His anger only intensified.
“Charmaine, you’ve been plotting to ruin Liam from the start!”
“Heh.”
Charmaine let out a cold, mocking laugh. “He made his own poor choices and ruined his own future. Who else is there to blame?”
Maxwell fired back, “He didn’t do anything that really hurt you. It was just a prank. But because of your report, he lost the job he loved, and now he’s been hauled off by the cops!”
Charmaine’s sneer only deepened.
“Just because it didn’t cause immediate harm, does that mean it wasn’t harm? To get back at me for Leah and Veronica’s sake, he had someone steal from me and my friends. Is this what he’s sworn to do as someone who serves the public? Is this his duty, something he’s trained for every day? And now you’re after me. You’re the impartial Captain Nelson. Do you think what Liam did was right?”
Her words hit Maxwell hard, almost like a physical blow, leaving him speechless for a moment.
He was indeed biased toward Liam, but every word Charmaine spoke rang true.
Liam had made a simple, stupid mistake!
Maxwell even felt a bit embarrassed to ask Charmaine to go to the police station and explain that it was all just a joke, to help get Liam out. It was a request that now seemed humiliating to make.
His fists clenched tightly, his face a mask of hard emotion.
Charmaine didn’t even glance his way, brushing past him as if he didn’t exist.
Celeste stood still for a moment, then seemed to realize something.
Fuming, she stormed up to Maxwell, her eyes blazing with fury. “Hah, I knew it. I was wondering how Veronica managed to find some guy to target us, but it turns out it’s Leah’s doing…”
She didn’t hold back–her voice echoing with anger through the hotel lobby. “You people from the Nelsons really have no shame! Always going after Charmaine. She let it all out in one breath, finally feeling a little relief from the frustration of not being able to buy the jewelry she wanted.
With her head held high, she quickly caught up with Charmaine, her tone shifting from fierce to sweet and playful. “Charmaine, wait for me!”
Maxwell stood frozen, his body tense, staring after them as they walked away. After a long while, he finally left the hotel.
Celeste, thrilled by the idea of Liam facing consequences, chatted non–stop as they entered the elevator.
She was ecstatic–nothing felt better than seeing him pay for what he’d done!
“Charmaine, well done. A selfish, corrupt guy like him should never stay in the force. Who knows what worse things he might do next!”
Charmaine stared off into the distance, remaining silent, clearly uninterested.
In her past life, after being forced to kneel and admit her mistakes at Liam’s funeral, Charmaine had dug into the cause of his downfall.
Liam’s failure had been entirely his own fault–his arrogance and disrespect for authority had led him down this path. He refused to listen to his superiors, ignored the advice of his subordinates, and acted recklessly. In the end, he ruined his own career and endangered those around him.
He had always been self–righteous, incompetent, and a troublemaker who never followed the rules.
This time, he had gotten lucky. But there were no promises about next time.
When they returned to their room, Celeste kept talking until she noticed that Charmaine was packing a large bag. Curious, she peered inside.
“Charmaine, what’s in there? It looks so packed!”
Charmaine gave a faint smile. “It’s Emyr’s birthday tomorrow.”
“Wow, is that a gift for Mr. Emyr? It’s huge!”
As Celeste spoke, she grinned and stroked her chin. “So, does that mean I’ll be alone tonight?”
