“If you had only agreed to the surgery earlier, I would never have dropped everything to come back. Liam and the others wouldn’t be dead!” Maxwell’s words struck Charmaine like a barrage of sharp stones, each one hitting with brutal force and stealing her breath away.
“Wh–what? I didn’t know…” she stammered, her voice quivering as panic seized her chest.
“Of course you didn’t,” Maxwell mocked. “You always play the helpless victim, pretending to be pitiful just to get sympathy. All for your own selfish vanity, and in the end, you wasted lives for nothing!”
Each of his words crushed her more than the last, the weight of them making it hard for Charmaine to even breathe.
Just then, Leah, now fully recovered and surrounded by the Nelsons, burst into the room. She clung to Maxwell’s arm, her face streaked with tears as she pleaded for Charmaine’s sake.

“Maxwell, if anyone is to blame, it’s me, If I hadn’t gotten sick, she wouldn’t have had to endure all of this, and Liam would’ve never had to take over as the temporary leader … It’s all my fault!”
Milo, full of sympathy, supported Leah as she stumbled, her fragile form clearly more important to him than Charmaine, whose pale face and labored breathing went unnoticed.
“Leah, don’t say that,” Milo interjected firmly. “The source of all this is Charmaine. If she had agreed to the transplant sooner, none of this would’ve happened!”
Even Alec, the morally upright prosecutor and her brother, added, “No matter how you look at it, Charmaine is indirectly responsible for the deaths of Maxwell’s teammates.”
With everyone pointing fingers at her, Charmaine, barely able to sit up, felt herself branded as a murderer.
Maxwell’s rage was boiling; he dragged her to Liam’s funeral, forced her to kneel before his black–and–white photo.
After shoving her back toward the Nelsons, Maxwell didn’t let up. He gave her one last cold warning, “You’d better watch out.”
What a warning that was.
Maxwell blamed Charmaine for hesitating about the surgery, but what he didn’t know was that Leah had been pretending to be ill, scheming to steal Charmaine’s fortune and destroy her life.
If anyone was responsible for Liam’s death, it was the greedy and deceitful Leah.
But now, to Charmaine’s surprise, Liam was alive, standing before her, full of energy and pride after completing his mission. Behind him, Veronica hovered, clearly benefiting from someone else’s success.
It was obvious that someone had spoken to Liam to instigate this, and he was here to confront Charmaine.
Charmaine didn’t need to think twice to understand what was going on.
The store clerk, who had been eavesdropping, looked at Charmaine and Celeste with a mix of surprise and
curiosity. now catching on to the implications of Liam’s words.

“Who says we’re showing off?” Celeste snapped. “This money wouldn’t even cover one day of my spending in Ledo! Whether I buy anything or not, what business is it of yours?”
“Oh, please,” Liam sneered. “Anyone can make up stories. I could just as easily say I lost a billion dollars at a casino in Edorah! It’s the 20th century. Who still picks pockets in busy malls? It’s too much of a risk to take.”
Liam insisted that they were just making excuses for not paying, accusing them of pretending to have lost their belongings.
His loud accusations caught the attention of other shoppers, who began whispering among themselves.
Celeste’s face flushed with anger, but before she could retort, Liam pulled out a card and handed it to the clerk, pointing at an item in the display, “Wrap up that tie clip, please.”
In less than two minutes, Liam made up his mind, swiping his card without hesitation. The clerk’s eyes brightened as she eagerly took the card, ready to ring him up.
She returned the items Celeste had been eyeing on the display case; her smile turning colder, laced with disdain.
“Why don’t you ladies hurry up and search again? If you wait too long, your phone and wallet might just find their way back to you.”
Veronica watched the scene unfold, couldn’t help but burst into loud laughter, clutching her stomach. “Hahahaha!”
Celeste, humiliated by their smugness, was on the edge of exploding.
Charmaine’s face froze, her demeanor turning icy.
She was about to ask the hotel staff for help when, just then, the mall manager, who had been making his rounds, noticed Charmaine. He approached swiftly, bowing slightly with a warm smile.
“Ms. Nelson, what a surprise to see you again.”
The mall manager’s respectful greeting immediately changed the clerk’s attitude. Her calmness vanished, replaced by nervous tension.
She could feel the shift in the air.
That was when it hit her. Emyr had spent two hours in the mall earlier with Charmaine, and the building’s higher–ups had been watching the surveillance footage the entire time.
It wasn’t a small matter. This year’s top spender, the one who rented out the entire hotel, was shopping here. They had been keeping a close eye on him.
Everyone had assumed Emyr was out shopping with his girlfriend, and they expected him to drop a small fortune.
