“Of course! Charmaine and I are heading up the mountain. Could you give us a lift?”

Before Emyr could even respond, Tad had already taken the suitcases and loaded them into the car.
Given the option, Charmaine saw no reason to keep walking.
She was about to get in when a voice rang out from behind, tinged with desperation.
“Mr. Emyr!”
Veronica hurried forward, her face carefully arranged into a look of helpless appeal. “Our bus broke down. Would you mind giving us a hand?”
Reactions varied among the crowd.
Daniel and Leah, in particular, looked the most displeased.
Daniel had just contacted the forestry department for help, and now Veronica was trying to turn to Emyr instead, making Daniel appear incapable in front of everyone.
Leah, on the other hand, saw straight through Veronica’s little act. It had nothing to do with the bus- Veronica simply couldn’t bear seeing Charmaine under Emyr’s protection and wanted to remind everyone of her presence.
That didn’t sit well with Leah. Even if she didn’t like Charmaine, she refused to let Veronica step on her pride.
Inwardly, she cursed Veronica for ruining her carefully laid–out plan.
Meanwhile, the getting out of this muddy mess. If Emyr was willing to help, why wait around for the forestry team?

Charmaine turned to Veronica, who was staring at Emyr with hopeful, almost pleading eyes.
Seeing her put on such a fragile act, Charmaine could guess exactly why Veronica had the confidence to speak up. The thought alone made something tighten in her chest.
She frowned slightly, her subtle frown not escaping Emyr’s notice.
He smiled faintly before shifting his attention back to Charmaine. “You decide whether I help or not.”
It wasn’t a suggestion. He was leaving the choice entirely in her hands.
Veronica’s composure almost cracked. Her heart pounded as unease crept in.
Why was he asking Charmaine? He should’ve just agreed! How could he …
Charmaine met his gaze, dark and unreadable, and instantly understood.

Her lips curled slightly. “No, don’t help them.”
Emyr nodded without hesitation. “Alright.”
Veronica’s eyes widened in disbelief.
The group erupted.

“Charmaine! How could you do this? We all came here together, and you’re just going to let Mr. Emyr abandon us?”
“Yeah! Even if you didn’t care, at least Veronica spoke up for all of us. How could you be so heartless?”
“We supported you when people were attacking you on the forums, and now you turn your back on us when we need help? Do you have no conscience?”
Charmaine remained calm despite their angry accusations. She simply glanced at them and replied coolly, “Weren’t you the ones who said we shouldn’t go with you?”
The noisy complaints immediately died down.
Charmaine sneered. “You guys are so hypocritical. Do you have no conscience?”
With just a few words, she had completely shut them up.
Celeste was already seated in the car behind, happily swinging her legs. She was so thrilled that she nearly clapped in excitement.
For a moment, she had worried that Charmaine might let her sense of kindness get the better of her and agree to help.

The crowd fell silent, faces flushed with embarrassment.
It wasn’t until the line of vehicles effortlessly made its way up the mountain and disappeared into the forest that someone finally blurted out, “Who was the idiot who said that? You screwed us over!”
The moment those words were spoken, all eyes turned to the two girls from earlier, putting them at the center of everyone’s frustration.
They already regretted crossing Leah and Celeste, but now, their regret ran even deeper.
Never in their wildest dreams had they thought Emyr would show up and take Charmaine’s side so firmly.
Leah pursed her lips, silently mocking the clueless lower–class fools. Keeping up appearances, she asked in a seemingly considerate tone, “Emyr, the forestry team should be arriving sooner now, right?”
