“How can you say that? Building a relationship takes effort. The more you go through together, the better you understand each other. It deepens the bond and makes the relationship stronger!” Kane argued passionately.
“Don’t you want Chara to love you for more than just your looks?” he added.
Emyr did not respond immediately. It was not Charmaine’s love for his appearance he doubted–she hardly cared for that.
Rather, she found utility in it when necessary.
He watched Kane’s enthusiastic display with a skeptical look that clearly read “naive.”
“She’s not like those superficial girls you date.”
“True, those other women can’t compare to Chara, but…” Kane raised an eyebrow, “Women are driven by emotion. It’s a universal trait.”
“My methods might be old–school, but they work. Trust me on this, Emyr!”
Emyr pushed away his talkative brother and resumed his meal, though his attention seemed elsewhere. He stole glances at Charmaine, who was playfully interacting with a small fish in the pond, a thoughtful expression flickering across his face.
Unaware of Kane’s scheming on Emyr’s behalf, Charmaine noticed the brothers whispering and wisely stepped back.
Little Fish eagerly consumed all the salmon from her hand. As Charmaine reached through the net to pat its thick tail, she mused aloud.
“Hmm? You seem chubbier than when I first got here. Who’s been feeding you extra?”
Little Fish seemed to sense something and scuttled away quickly.
Charmaine laughed softly as her phone buzzed with incoming messages.
Rex was sending her updates with photos
It appeared that Basil had finally located Mia, and Rex was with her, helping to facilitate an apology today.
Rex texted, “Mia usually looks so sweet and calm, but she turns into a real firecracker around Basil!”
Charmaine could easily picture it.
Basil and Mia often clashed. He was traditional and conservative, wishing Mia would settle down somewhere.
However, Mia cherished her freedom, had a fascination with tarot cards, and retained a childlike spirit, which inevitably led to friction with her disciplined father. When together, they frequently butted heads.
Charmaine replied, “Try to guide Mia gently. Basil’s blood pressure isn’t great. Avoid harsh arguments.”

Rex texted back, “Totally, I’ve been playing peacekeeper till I’m blue in the face. Then out of nowhere, Basil asks if I’m courting Mia. Nearly gave me a heart attack!
“Me, courting? I’m set on becoming the richest man around, not on romances. And Mia’s more like a sister to me!”
Charmaine texted, “Got it. Just make sure everything is clear between you two.”
Rex kept complaining on the other end and suddenly changed the subject.
Rex asked, “Weird, I haven’t heard from Sid lately. Has he been in touch with
you,
Boss?”
At the mention of those names, Charmaine’s eyes flickered, responding nonchalantly, “No need to worry about him, he’s busy with a project for me.”
Rex looked confused. “Huh?”

The background noise during Bennett’s call was telling; Leah could almost picture the scene around him.
Her frustration boiled over. “You’ve been gambling again! Have you lost your mind? Do you think I print money for you to waste?”
