Charmaine paused for a moment, her mind slow to process his words. “Is it the late–night snack you brought last time? It was so good,” she finally said, a hint of excitement in her voice.
Emyr nodded. “Take it easy for now. We’ll head out together later tonight.”
As she caught the undertone in his words, Charmaine’s eyes widened in surprise. “Wait, I’m going too? But you’ll be talking business. Isn’t it a bit strange if I’m there?”
Emyr narrowed his gaze, his eyes flickering dangerously. “What, do you want me to keep packing food for you?”
Charmaine quickly waved her hand. “That’s not what I meant …
Without saying another word, Emyr turned his wheelchair toward the door, his tone cold. “If you’re hungry, you can eat by yourself.”
Charmaine stood there, speechless. Is Satan really treating me like some kind of pig? They’ll be talking business, and I’m supposed to just eat? How audacious does he think I am?
When Veronica came home from school later that evening, she immediately called Emyr. Her voice was soft, almost unsure, as she asked if he had time for a meal.
Emyr replied that he was too busy, directing her to Tad instead.
Tad is just an employee. What good is he?
Veronica ended the call, frustration twisting her face. She considered reaching out to Leah for advice but quickly dismissed the thought, not wanting to seem weak in front of her.
I have to prove I’m better than Charmaine and Leah. I can handle this on my own.
Determined, she angrily scrolled through her phone.
Then, a post from Shawn caught her eye.
After their last meeting, Veronica had shamelessly added all of them as friends, hoping to get closer to Emyr’s circle. Maybe one day, she’d be familiar enough to join them.
However, Keon politely declined, saying he didn’t use social media. Sinnova said his friend list was full. Only Shawn had accepted her friend request.
Shawn had posted a picture of a McLaren logo with the caption, “Was planning to go out and have some fun tonight, but Mr. Emyr called me for a gathering. Life’s tough!”
Veronica’s eyes lit up.
So, Mr. Emyr is having a gathering tonight?
Since he won’t meet me, maybe I should go to him. After all, once we see each other, he might soften up and change his
mind.

Shawn quickly replied with “The Regal Tavern” and after a brief pause, asked, “Did Emyr invite you?”
Veronica hesitated before exiting the conversation, clutching her phone tightly. Her heart raced after she lied, and she could feel the pulse in her neck quicken.
Shawn, reading the conversation without a reply, was left confused.
But he didn’t think much of it. After all, Veronica was from the Jameses. Nothing could go wrong.
Tonight’s gathering was set at The Regal Tavern, their usual spot.
Keon arrived early, waiting at the table. Shawn and Sinnova showed up together, followed by Freya and Kane, who met them at the door. Then, other families who had business dealings with them and Emyr arrived.
Veronica used the same excuse, showing the staff at The Regal Tavern her chat with Shawn. The respectful staff immediately guided her to the private room.
As she stepped inside, every gaze in the room turned toward her. Veronica’s heart raced in her chest.
Freya stood up, a sharp gasp escaping her lips, glaring at her. Her face was a mix of disgust and contempt. “Who let you in here?”
Veronica flinched, knowing Freya came from a powerful family and had strong connections in the room. Without Emyr there, she instinctively moved toward Shawn. “Mr. Shawn, I … ”
Shawn scratched the back of his head. “Didn’t Emyr invite her?”
Freya’s hostility toward Veronica flared. “What’s her connection to Emyr?”
Shawn shrugged. “They’re friends, I guess.”
Freya eyed Veronica for several moments, then sneered. “No way. We’re here for business. How could Emyr allow some outsider to join us? She must’ve overheard something about the dinner and showed up uninvited!”
Veronica’s heart sank. She thought they were just having a casual meal, but now she realized it was a business meeting!
Shawn, caught off guard, fell silent.
Looking at Veronica’s anxious face, he started questioning everything. Could Freya be right?
