Veronica’s expression immediately turned to one of disgust. “Why do you even care about her? She’s the one responsible for your brother’s death! If your family hadn’t had a forbidden contact with Charmaine, I would’ve already gone and taught her a lesson myself.”
Leah’s face showed a trace of sorrow. “The past is the past–let’s leave it behind. I think Milo, wherever he is now, wouldn’t want to see us continuing this feud with my sister. It’s better for everyone this way”
Three days had passed, and there was still no news of Milo. Leah had gone from anxious anticipation to complete composure.
She was sure that Milo’s survival was simply impossible.
The old man’s stuff had always been working. If not for him, Leah wouldn’t have been enjoying such smooth sailing all these years.
But still, she couldn’t but wonder when would Charmaine’s luck finally return to her.
Her back was already covered in an irritating rash, and it was driving her insane!
Leah instinctively wanted to scratch at it, but for the sake of her looks, she forced herself to endure the discomfort.
Her eyes flickered with thought before she casually said to Veronica, “Chara will probably be attending as well.”
Just as she expected, Veronica’s expression instantly darkened with resentment. “Who is she to attend such a grand event?”
She was from the esteemed Jameses yet even she wasn’t qualified to attend. How could Charmaine possibly be allowed to meet the Four Elders?
At the same time, a possibility crept into her mind–one she loathed to acknowledge.
Leah’s lips curled ever so slightly as she spoke slowly. “She’s attending because of Mr. Emyr.”
Veronica clenched her fists and said disdainfully, “What’s so impressive about it? She only knew how to rely
on men!”
Hearing the thick jealousy in Veronica’s voice, Leah smirked inwardly.
Charmaine had Emyr backing her. But wasn’t Veronica also desperate to cling to him?
Hypocrisy at its finest.
Leah let out a soft laugh. “It doesn’t matter what she’s relying on. If it helps her make connections with powerful people, then it’s still an advantage. Veronica, maybe you should consider doing the same. After all, you are his savior, aren’t you?”
Veronica’s eyes flickered as a new thought settled in.
Meanwhile, Celeste had been listening to Veronica and Leah’s back–and–forth and was on the verge of gagging.

Charmaine remained indifferent. “That’s just how she’s always been. You’re only now feeling sick?”
Celeste made a face like she’d swallowed something bitter. “Ugh, don’t remind me. I was blind before, but I’m a changed person now!”
Just then, Charmaine’s phone lit up with a notification. She glanced at it, and for the first time that day, a spark of light flickered in her usually calm, beautiful eyes.
Celeste was curious. What kind of message could make Charmaine look that happy?
Before she could sneak a peek, Charmaine was already gathering her things, preparing to leave.
Surprised, Celeste asked, “Wait, class isn’t over yet. Where are you going?”
“I have something to take care of. Cover for me.”
After a pause, Charmaine added, “And stop bothering Emyr.”
Celeste stuck her tongue out playfully. “Oh, come on. I was just trying to keep you from getting into trouble.”
Charmaine’s response was casual. “I can make up for any missed grades.”
Celeste was speechless.
Ouch. Straight to the heart.
Charmaine left soon after, and not long later, the teacher arrived for the next class.
She noticed Charmaine’s empty seat immediately, but recalling the school principal’s instructions from a few days ago, she pretended not to see and continued teaching.
Once class ended, Celeste lingered behind, playing a few rounds of a mobile game.
When most of the students had left, she finally packed up and exited the classroom–only to be stopped by a man dressed like a walking brand advertisement.
He wore oversized sunglasses and a black face mask. His outfit was screaming “flashy playboy” as if he was terrified someone wouldn’t notice how expensive his clothes were.
“Hey,” the man called out. “There’s someone named Charmaine in your class, right? How come I didn’t see her leave?”
Celeste eyed him skeptically. “Why are you looking for Charmaine?”
Rex seemed to come to an understanding and nodded knowingly.
Then, he pulled out a long leather wallet and casually slipped out 200 dollar bills. “Now can you tell me?”
Celeste was taken abc by his actions.
Did this guy who looked like a wannabe nightclub host–just try to bribe me with 200 bucks?

Seeing her lack of response, Rex sighed and pulled out five more bills. As he handed them over, he smirked. “Alright, alright, you’re making me rethink things. You’re not easy to impress, huh?”
Celeste’s eye twitched slightly and looked up at Rex. “Do you want me to be even more impressed by you?”
