Chapter 19 The Talk of the City
Emyr cast a suspicious glance at Charmaine. “Did you prepare this yourself?”
Charmaine nodded. “Exactly.”
Finished
Seeing him staring at the bowl of soup without moving she nudged him. “Mr. Emyr, aren’t you going to try it?”
Emyr shot her a sideways look, then picked up the spoon and took a sip.
He had assumed it would just look good but taste mediocre.
To his surprise, he took three more sips in quick succession.
Noticing Charmaine watching him expectantly, Emyr paused. “You can leave now.”
Charmaine raised an eyebrow.“Alright, call me if you need me, Mr. Emyr.”
With a lazy wave, she casually walked out.
Emyr looked at Alfred, and Alfred immediately understood. “Mr. Emyr, the breakfast was really made by Ms. Nelson. She did it all by herself in the kitchen; no one helped her.”
Alfred smiled warmly, adding, “Ms. Nelson’s cooking skills are quite impressive, aren’t they?”
“Well… it’s decent…‘
Emyr kept sipping the soup.
Alfred’s face lit up with a satisfied, fatherly smile.
Just then, Kane burst in, fresh from the outside. “Emyr, why are you eating alone?”
He looked around, a bit anxious. “Where’s my future sister–in–law?“.
Had I missed something while chasing after love for just one night? Had his future sister–in–law been kicked out?
“Mr. Kane, Ms. Nelson just prepared breakfast for Mr. Emyr and went to rest afterward,” Alfred explained.
Kane’s eyes sparkled. Rushing to Emyr’s side, he leaned over, practically shoving his face into the bowl. “A breakfast made with love? Emyr, you’re living the dream!”
Emyr was done talking to him.
{
Sensing he was pushing it, Kane wisely pulled back and took a seat nearby, his usual cocky smile fading slightly as he grew more serious.
Emyr remained calm. “Have you found anything?”
Kane nodded. “Uh… the wonder doctor canceled all his dealings with the Nelsons overnight. Our people completely lost track of him.”
Frustration crept into his voice. Just when they had a glimmer of hope, the trail went cold.
“And there’s more. The Nelsons‘ troubles aren’t limited to the wonder doctor fiasco. Their highly publicized partnership with Ydris Group has also fallen apart. Just months ago, they were celebrating that contract, and now its cancellation has made them the talk of the city.”
Kane rubbed his chin thoughtfully and continued, “Could they have offended someone powerful?”
Emyr’s mind flashed to a certain face, one that often made him feel like wringing a neck.
Last night, Charmaine severed ties with the Nelsons…
.
His eyes darkened as he quietly mulled over something
After her early start to the day, Charmaine returned to her room and promptly flopped onto her bed.
Her phone buzzed with a few notifications. She opened them.
Rex had sent a series of links and a flood of text messages.
“Boss! A belated birthday gift for you! I know you love designing clothes when you’re bored, so guess what? I’ve opened a fashion studio under the Ydris Group. From now on, this studio will exclusively produce the clothes you love. Everything’s ready, from the store manager to the cleaning staff. We just need an assistant. I’ve gathered some design submissions online for you to look through. Take your time and pick someone you like.”
“This Rex… what am I going to do with him?”
Charmaine muttered, shaking her head with a mix of exasperation and affection.
She clicked on the link and found dozens of profiles and clothing design portfolios.
Scrolling through the preview images, one design caught her eye, making her pause.
Charmaine dialed Rex’s number.
Rex was clearly surprised by the call and immediately started boasting. “So, Boss! What do you think? You love my birthday gift, right?”
Charmaine let out a small, meaningful laugh. “I love it!
Rex was stunned!
Not just “like“—but love!
He was practically floating by happiness.
Just as he was about to bask in his self–satisfaction, Charmaine asked, “These designs… are they all submissions?”
Rex quickly confirmed, “Sure! I had them gathered under the Ydris Group name. The initial drafts were screened, and what I sent you are the ones that passed two rounds of selection. If you’re going to hire an assistant, they’ve got to have some serious talent. Not just anyone can apply!”
Rex didn’t know much about fashion design. but as Charmaine’s number one fan. he believed anything
she did was the best.
Even if it was just an assistant, they had to be extraordinary to match her.
Charmaine sent Rex a screenshot of one particular design. “Look into this person for me.”
Rex opened the image and instantly beamed with pride “Ah, the girl named ‘Lyra, huh? I knew it! Her designs caught my eye right away. You liked her work too, Boss, didn’t you?”
