Chapter 18 No Wonder It Hurt So Much Back Then
Finished
Bennett stared intently at Leah, his voice dark and firm “We still need Charmaine’s kidney. That’s non- negotiable.”
Eastlake Manor.
Emyr was deep in sleep when a strange, tickling sensation brushed against his ear.
He opened his eyes just in time to catch Charmaine quickly pulling back a feather duster.
Emyr’s irritation flared immediately.
His voice was low and dangerous as he growled, “Charmaine!”
Charmaine positioned herself a few feet from the bed, close enough to be present but far enough to maintain a sense of detachment. Her face was a picture of innocence.
What was with this guy and his habit of grabbing people by the throat at the slightest provocation?
She studied his face for a moment. Even freshly woken, he was strikingly handsome.
The fate had indeed favored him.
In her calmest voice, Charmaine said, “No need to shout, Mr. Emyr. I can hear you just fine.”
Emyr’s expression remained cold. “Who gave you permission to come in here?”
“You did, Mr. Emyr,” she blinked innocently. “Didn’t you assign me as your personal staff? My job is to take care of you, and my shift starts at 7 AM sharp. So naturally, I’m here to report for duty.”
Emyr’s narrow eyes fixated on her, a cold gleam flashing in his gaze, as though he could see right through
her.
After a moment, he let out a sarcastic chuckle.
“I have to admit, you’re more shameless than the rest of them.”
She knew he was mocking her.
Of course, he’d assigned me to be a house staff just to make me give up and walk away. But I’d accepted the role without a single complaint.
Charmaine’s smile stayed in place as she coolly countered, “Of course. I’m not like those other women. I’m here to ‘repay‘ you, Mr. Emyr
She emphasized the word ‘repay
As expected, Emyr’s striking face darkened further, his expression turning stormy.
“What are you standing there for? Get to work.”
Now it was Charmaine’s turn to be taken aback. “What exactly am I supposed to do?”
Emyr shot her a side glance. “You’re a house staff, and you don’t know your duties?”
Well, she didn’t know.
My whole plan was to mess with him. What had Alfred said earlier when I got here?

It wasn’t my fault, really. After all, I had come with good intentions, offering to help him with his recovery, and he had the nerve to make me a house staff…
Naturally, I had to make him suffer a little.
Noticing the neatly folded clothes on the bench at the foot of the bed, Charmaine suddenly had an idea. “Mr. Emyr, let’s get you dressed first.”
Without waiting for a response, she stepped forward and pulled the covers off him.
Emyr hadn’t expected her to move so quickly, and for a second, he was too surprised to react.
“Wait!”
Charmaine’s eyes instantly landed on a rather obvious natural occurrence,” and she frowned, muttering under her breath, “No wonder it hurt so much back then…”
Emyr snatched the covers back with a furious glare. “Get out!”
Well, it took a bit longer than expected, but there it was the get–out.
Charmaine didn’t argue. She obediently turned and left. Tad passed her a glance before entering the
room.
Alfred rushed up to her, concerned. “Ms. Nelson, is everything alright?”
Charmaine shook her head with a grin. “Don’t worry, Alfred. I’m fine.”
Alfred blinked. “Actually, I meant–is Mr. Emyr alright
Charmaine cleared her throat. “Oh, him? He’s fine. Probably just a little grumpy from waking up. No big deal.”
That thunderous shout from earlier didn’t seem like a big deal to Alfred.
But ever since Emyr’s accident, he’d always been shrouded in a cold gloom. Even when angry, he rarely showed any emotion.
This was the first time he had seen Emyr so energetic.
Clearly, Charmaine had a different effect on him.
A few moments later, Tad came out of the room and told Charmaine, “Mr. Emyr wants onions in his breakfast. You’ll be preparing it.”
Charmaine nodded. “Sure, no problem.”
Tad turned to Alfred and added, “Today’s breakfast will be made entirely by her. No one else is allowed to help.”
Charmaine raised an eyebrow and glanced toward Einr’s room.
What a petty man.
Half an hour later, Emyr appeared in the dining room, dressed in a navy–blue casual outfit.
He had expected to find Charmaine teary–eyed and struggling, with her eyes stinging from the onions, pleading for help. But instead, she stood calmly at the far end of the table, composed and confident.
When she saw him, she smiled, her eyes curving into crescents, and the tiny red beauty mark beneath one eye made her all the more captivating.
Emyr’s handsome brow furrowed as he walked to the dining table.
Alfred stepped forward to lift the cover off the dish, revealing a beautifully presented bowl of Elvenwood onion soup. The rich aroma filled the air.
