Charmaine assisted Emyr with the needle, using the moment to discreetly check his pulse as he rested with his eyes shut.
He slowly opened his eyes halfway, fixing a serious gaze on her.
“How is it?” he inquired after a brief pause.
Charmaine set his hand down gently. “Your cold–related illness is showing improvement. You should continue with the medicinal baths, and in a few months, you should recover about 80% to 90%.
“Alright.”
Just as Emyr was about to speak again, the phone on the table rang.
He glanced at the screen and said. “Can you answer that for me?”
The caller ID showed an unknown number.
Charmaine had no choice but to pick up. “Hello, Mr. Emyr is currently unavailable to take calls.”
Veronica, who had been eagerly waiting to hear Emyr’s voice, felt an instant wave of disappointment, as if a bucket of cold water had been poured over her.
Hearing the heavy breathing on the other end, Charmaine knew the person was still listening. So, she repeated herself, “He’s not able to speak right now. If there’s something important, you can relay the message to him for me.”
Veronica clutched the fabric of her clothing tightly. After a moment’s hesitation, she finally spoke. “Charmaine, it’s Veronica. I need to speak with Mr. Emyr.”
Charmaine’s eyes narrowed slightly.
She hadn’t expected her to be the caller.
Recalling their brief exchange in the hallway the previous night, Charmaine had no patience for pleasantries. “I already told you twice. Are you deaf?”
What did she say?
Veronica was stunned by her bluntness and snapped back immediately, “Charmaine, what’s that supposed to mean? You’re just a maid. Who gave you the authority to pick up Mr. Emyr’s calls?”
Before responding, Charmaine casually switched the phone to speaker mode.
Veronica was caught up in her frustration and unable to hold back her emotions, unknowingly making Emyr hear every word.
Charmaine arched an eyebrow and turned her calm gaze toward him.
She pressed her lips together slightly, as if wordlessly telling him: Handle your own problems.
Emyr met her eyes for a brief moment before responding icily, “I asked her to answer it.”

“Yes.” His voice came through, as cold as ice, sending a shiver down her spine.

She had always thought of Emyr as gentle and reserved, but now, in her fit of anger, she realized he had been there the entire time. He had heard everything!
This had to be Charmaine’s doing!
It had to be on purpose!
Veronica struggled to suppress the fear rising in her chest. Swallowing her frustration, she softened her voice, putting on a pitiful tone. “Mr. Emyr, I’m really sorry for what I said earlier. I was just concerned that Charmaine might be up to something behind your back, and I overreacted…
She attempted to justify herself, eager to maintain her graceful reputation in front of Emyr.
Additionally, she clarified an important detail that her frustration was not aimed at Charmaine but stemmed from her concern for him.
Charmaine lifted the phone, unable to hold back a quiet laugh..
Oh. Veronica truly had a talent for acting.
It seemed she had picked up quite a bit from Leah.
And regarding Emyr
He looked just as disgusted by Veronica’s sickly sweet, over–the–top voice as she was, Charmaine couldn’t have been more delighted.
Catching the faint sound of Charmaine’s laughter, Emyr shot her a sharp look.
His mood was not great, and his patience for Veronica was wearing thin. “What do you need from me?”
He had no interest in indulging her antics.
For a brief moment, Veronica felt awkward but quickly spoke up. “Mr. Emyr, I understand that you are extremely occupied with various responsibilities. I wouldn’t trouble you unless it was something only you could resolve…”
Since he remained silent, she pressed on. “Mr. Emyr, you know Leah, right? She has a connection with you, and she happens to be a dear friend of mine now.
“Last night, her birth parents did something that offended the wrong people. Leah came to me crying, and I couldn’t help but feel bad for her. So I thought… Could I possibly ask you to lend her a hand?”
As Veronica spoke hesitantly, the smile on Charmaine’s lips gradually faded.
Until it vanished entirely.
In its place was an icy chill.
Her eyes brimmed with contempt.
Leah was truly calculating. Despite knowing what had occurred the previous night, she still pushed Veronica to plead with Emyr on her behalf.

Hah!
Emyr’s gaze also darkened as he narrowed his eyes.
“Are you aware of what you’re asking?”

Veronica froze. Over the phone, she failed to immediately detect the shift in his tone and instinctively responded. “I understand that Mr. Read made a mistake last night, but he has already faced the consequences. He’s still in the hospital, even threatening to end his own life. I believe he has suffered enough. And Leah is my best friend; I can’t stand seeing her so heartbroken!”
