Chapter 136 Cold Confrontations
Charmaine’s voice, laced with scorn, cut through the air sharply, silencing him mid–sentence.

Her gaze was icy, as though a thousand frosts had settled within her eyes. One glance was enough to chill anyone to the bone.
“Back when I was with the Nelsons, what I could do and what I couldn’t was entirely up to your whims. I was a pathetic people–pleaser back then, wasn’t I? Even when you labeled me uncultured, berated me as unruly, or mocked me for being ungrateful, I still bent over backward to appease you all. Remember how just calling me ‘Grandma‘ would ruin Valda’s appetite? How dare I, someone so beneath you all, taint your lofty existence with my words?”
“Milo’s voice faltered, the weight of her words pressing down on him like a suffocating fog.
This tall, once–commanding man seemed utterly defeated, swaying as if he could collapse at any moment.
After a long time, he suddenly inhaled deeply. Then, without warning, he raised his hand and slapped himself hard across the face.
The sound echoed through more than half the cafeteria, drawing every pair of eyes to them. Gasps rippled through the crowd as they stared, wide–eyed, at Milo, who now stood with blood seeping from the corner of his mouth.
Im sorry,” he rasped, his voice hoarse and laden with regret.
Charmaine remained unmoved. She didn’t acknowledge his apology.
Huh, he says sorry now!
It’s too late.
His gaze fixed on her with an intensity that bordered on desperation. I’m sorry, I’ll take responsibility for everything terrible I’ve done to you. I’ll show you how sincere I am, no matter what it takes. Whether you forgive me or not, it’s your choice. The decision is entirely yours.”
He wiped the blood from his mouth with the back of his hand, the crimson smear glaring against his skin. Then, clutching his tray, he stood. Just before leaving, he glanced at her one last time and murmured. “T’ll wait for the day you’re willing to call my name again.”
After saying that, he hurried off as if fleeing from the rejection he feared.
Charmaine, unfazed by the dramatic scene, ignored the whispers and stares around her. She merely poked at her now–cold and hardened potatoes and continued eating as though nothing had happened.
Barely a couple of bites later, a small strand of hair dangling into her line of sight.
Frowning, she turned to see Celeste seated beside her, covering her mouth and sobbing pitifully.
When Celeste finally dropped her hands, she wailed even louder, her words hiccupping between sobs. “Huwaaaa, I’m guilty too! Leah, that nasty little thief, she’s the one who stole parents and brothers from people and deserves the worst. She’s the one who told me about all of this! And I even laughed about it with that idi* Veronica! I’m so sorry, Charmaine! Milo slapped himself, why can’t I slap myself too? I pulled out a few strands of my hair instead. Please don’t be angry with mel”

Just then, her phone rang. It was Alfred calling.
Answering it, she was greeted by Alfred’s excited voice, “Ms. Nelson! Ms. White helped Mr. Emyr locate Master Field! This afternoon, Mr. Emyr will meet with him. Would you like to join them?”
They found Master Field!
Impossible. If Master Field had come to Eragos, there was no way I didn’t catch wind of it!
Charmaine responded swiftly. “Alfred, could you send me the address? I’ll head over this afternoon.”
“Of course!”
Wasting no time. Charmaine abandoned her meal and hurried out.
Once inside her car, she sent a message to Micah, inquiring about the old man. However, Micah didn’t reply. Calling him was no use either because his phone was off. Perhaps he was in surgery.
It doesn’t matter. Whether he’s Master Field or not. I’d know once I see him in person.
The address Alfred sent led her to a high–end residential complex near Eastlake.
This was an ultra–luxury apartment community developed in collaboration between a renowned international luxury brand and Eragos’s local real estate giant. In recent years, it had become the go–to residence for the city’s nouveau riche.
Freya owned a unit here. When Charmaine arrived at the entrance, the lavish display of shoes and handbags in the crystal cabinet outside was a dead giveaway.
Only someone like Freya, who loved to show off, would put designer bags on full display by the door. complete with five or six surveillance cameras trained on them.
Charmaine pressed the doorbell. It took a while before the intercom connected, and Freya’s reluctant face appeared on the screen.
“Tsk, what’s your deal, little maid? Do you have to tag along wherever Emyr goes?” Freya’s disdainful gaze was sharp, her voice brimming with annoyance, “Go home. You’re not welcome here.”
Charmaine narrowed her eyes. “I’m here to see Mr. Emyr
“Emyr is busy consulting with Master Field right now. He doesn’t have time for a lowly maid like you.” Freya puffed up like a triumphant peacock, waving her hand dismissively at the screen. “Bye–bye…”
