Jonah did not respond directly, only saying, “Let’s wait and see.”

After a brief pause, his curiosity got the better of him. “You used to dislike Charmaine. Why are you so concerned about her now?”
Milo looked a bit awkward. “It’s not that I’m concerned. I just feel sorry for her.”
His voice softened, carrying a hint of emotion. “Leah is the little princess in our family, but with the Reads… She’s never had the same good life with Bennett and Sophie. So, her attitude, her rebellion–it’s not entirely her fault.”
Jonah was surprised. It was not like Milo to empathize with Charmaine, and certainly not this deeply.
After considering it for a moment, he said, “I understand what you’re saying. I’ll think about it carefully.”
The mansion’s dining room had a stunning terrace that overlooked the backyard.
Leah appeared there under the guise of fetching hot milk.
She lingered, hoping to catch a bit of the brothers‘ conversation, but struggled to hear a word.
Frustrated, she fumed silently, wondering what kind of hold Charmaine had over Milo. Why was he suddenly defending her?
Just then, her phone vibrated with a message. Reading, a cold smirk crept across her face, her jealousy flaring.
Charmaine, let’s see how long you can keep this up.
Meanwhile, the competition for the South City development project was heating up, with companies pulling every string imaginable to secure the bid.
Charmaine was just as busy, though her focus lay elsewhere.
Her days were filled with preparing herbal baths and performing treatments for Emyr.
At first, she thought he would resist the treatments, but to her surprise, he started asking when she would have time to do treatments for him.
When she first heard this, she could not resist teasing. “Have you fallen in love with the feeling of being pricked?”
Emyr’s sharp and imposing face darkened instantly.
Quickly realizing her mistake, Charmaine backtracked Actually, I’d prefer to stabilize your cold symptoms before treating your leg injury. It’ll be better to wait until the cold has subsided a bit more.“.
Emyr’s leg had been disabled for over half a year, and the issue was far from simple.
Yet, for reasons he couldn’t explain, he trusted Charmaine’s abilities.
“Let’s go with what you’re suggesting,” he said.

Charmaine nodded. “Okay. Three herbal baths per week, with a course of about ten sessions. You’ll soak for half an hour before your needle treatment. How about starting around nine in the evening on alternate days?”
She paused, frowning as she muttered to herself, “Wait no, you need to rest by ten. This might interfere with your schedule. However, I have a competition coming up and need to attend mock classes after school, so I can only participate at later times…”
“Let’s stick to this time. I can adjust.”
And so, Charmaine’s schedule became even more packed.
Two days before the bidding, she heard from Celeste that the Reads were brimming with confidence.
They were practically celebrating in advance.
By contrast, Celeste was downcast, her optimism entirely gone.
Charmaine encouraged her to stay home and comfort Dominic. No one knew who would win until the results were announced anyway.
After school that day, Charmaine left as usual, heading to a private testing facility to pick up results for the pain medication she would send for Emyr.
As she stepped out of the school gate, a strange feeling made her glance back.
Groups of students were leaving in clusters, and everything seemed normal.
Shrugging it off, she turned and hailed a taxi.
The moment the taxi pulled away, a van eased out from a corner and began tailing it.
In a nearby car, an assistant watched the scene unfold and quietly reported, “Mr. Nelson, Ms. Nelson is being followed.”
Jonah looked up from the documents he was reviewing his brow furrowing at the news.
“Follow them.”
The testing facility was located in the new city district, a quiet and desolate area with barely anyone around.
Charmaine asked the taxi driver to wait for her, handing him some money in advance, before hurrying inside.
The van that had been trailing her pulled up moments later. Six tall, muscular men with fierce expressions stepped out, heading directly toward the taxi with an air of aggression.
However, just as they closed in, a sleek black car screeched to a stop in front of them, cutting off their path.
The window rolled down to reveal Jonah, his gaze sharp and unyielding. “Before you bother my sister, how about we have a little chat first?” he said, his tone cold and commanding.
