Chapter 117 Made an Exception
Bennett’s face, sharp and elongated, twisted in anger. His eyes burned with fury as he muttered, “I should’ve hired someone tougher to deal with her that time!”
Sophie blinked in surprise. “That time? You tried to hurt Charmaine? When did this happen?”
My
Bennett’s cheeks flushed red with rage. “What do you know about it, huh? You’re just a woman!”
Sophie, concerned, quickly responded, “I’m just worried the people you hired might not have been careful enough. What if they damaged her kidneys? What would we do if something happened to Leah?”
“Damaged her kidneys? They didn’t even lay a finger on her!” Bennett snapped, kicking the desk in frustration. His temper flared higher.
“Willard and Jonah are fools! They bought into her lies, and now they expect me to give them full background checks for the project? Am I their servant?”
Leah, who had been watching the heated video call from her computer, felt disdain for Bennett as he threw
a tantrum.
“They don’t believe Charmaine, of course,” Leah remarked dryly. “But now that Emyr’s backing her, they probably think she’s getting her info from him.”
Mentioning Emyr made Leah’s expression shift with conflicting emotions.
“No wonder! That little b*tch keeps ruining my plans! That thing with that old woman was all her fault too!” Bennett’s voice dripped with venom, his eyes blazing with hatred.
Leah shrugged lazily, clearly uninterested. “Forget the treatment fee. Didn’t you say we’d make at least 100 million from this project? Just find a way to get the files and pass them to Dad and Jonah. Then everything will be fine.”
In truth, it was Bennett who had first set his sights on this project.
But the Reads didn’t have enough influence to compete with the other powerful bidders. That was why he had asked Leah to persuade the Nelsons to step in.
Even if they didn’t get the major share, a smaller portion would still be a huge profit.
Bennett frowned, looking troubled. “It’s not that I don’t want to help, but … the project does carry some risks. If the Nelsons find out, they might reconsider and back out.”
Leah’s suspicion grew, and she pressed him with a sharp tone, “Bennett, are you trying to trick me?”
He quickly shifted, speaking in a soft, persuasive voice. “How could I trick you? I would never deceive you, my precious daughter!” Bennett added, trying to calm her down. “Trust me, Leah. The risk is minimal. It’s just the project managers who are exaggerating things. Don’t worry. I’ve got it under control.”
“Then get to work!” Leah’s patience wore thin, and she ended the call abruptly.
Bennett and Sophie had always insisted that she call them “Daddy” and “Mommy” when they were alone, claiming it would sound more affectionate than “Mom” and “Dad.” Leah couldn’t suppress her disgust regarding the idea.

Chapter 117 Made an Exception
# Finished
At the time, Emyr had not fully recovered and was propped up in bed. His shirt was unbuttoned at the chest, and his muscular arm was stretched out from beneath the covers.
Keon took his time checking Emyr’s heartbeat and then gently placed his fingers on Emyr’s wrist to feel his pulse.
When Keon remained silent, Emyr raised an eyebrow, his voice laced with sarcasm. “So, I’m worse than before, huh?”
Keon, usually composed and calm, couldn’t help but shoot him a cold glare.
He pulled the covers back over Emyr, then said, “You’re the only one who would joke around when you’re
this ill.”
Emyr just smiled faintly and didn’t respond.
Keon’s face grew more serious as he spoke, “I may specialize in pharmacology, but I can still tell a lot from a pulse. Emyr, your condition is actually a bit better than the last time I checked.”
Hearing this, a small smile tugged at the corner of Emyr’s lips.
“Well, that’s good news, isn’t it?”
Keon nodded with approval. “Definitely. That’s why I double–checked. Looks like we’re finally seeing some improvement. Those medicines weren’t totally useless after all.”
“It’s not the medicine that worked,” Emyr said casually. “It’s the person.”
Keon raised an eyebrow in confusion. “The person?”
Emyr didn’t hold back. “Charmaine’s been doing needle treatments for me, and they’ve actually made a difference. The meds can’t compare.”
Keon’s eyes widened in surprise, but he quickly regained his usual calm demeanor.
Emyr noticed his reaction and smirked. “You don’t seem too shocked by Charmaine’s needle treatments.”
Keon, in a low tone, replied, “You never let anyone close, but you made an exception for Ms. Nelson. I had my suspicions about that.”
