Charmaine grinned as she spoke, “I had to leave Eragos for a bit, but now that I’m back, I figured I’d drop by and say hello to you.”
The owner began to respond, but her words trailed off when her gaze landed on Emyr.
Even in a wheelchair, he gave off an air of unapproachability, making him seem as if he were beyond reach.
“The menu’s over there, or you can use the app to place an order,” she said, her eyes gleaming with curiosity. “Is this your new boyfriend?”
Charmaine quickly waved her hands, her face flushing. “No, no, he’s my boss! Don’t worry. I’ll order myself.”
“Alright, just let me know when you’re ready, and I’ll bring it out quickly,” the owner replied, then went off to tend to another table.
Once she was out of earshot, Charmaine let out a sigh of relief. But when she turned around, Emyr’s cold, piercing stare was fixed on her. “A new boyfriend? Hmph, Ms. Nelson, you sure have an interesting love life,” he remarked, his tone dripping with mockery. “Quite the experience, I see.”
Charmaine quickly defended herself. “That’s not true! I’ve been single my whole life! I mean, I’ve never been in a relationship.”
Emyr raised an eyebrow, clearly skeptical.
Ignoring his gaze, Charmaine went on with the order, wiping down the table with a napkin and rinsing the dishes with hot water.
-Seeing how at ease she was with the place, Emyr’s irritation grew. “It was Daniel, wasn’t it? The one you used
to come here with?”
Charmaine froze, her hand paused mid–motion. “How do you know that?”
A mocking smile tugged at Emyr’s lips. “So, you’re admitting it now?”
“No, no! I didn’t bring him here; he followed me here secretly!” Charmaine quickly corrected herself, continuing to arrange the dishes. She poured hot water over Emyr’s utensils twice, making sure to do it carefully.
“I used to work here, and Daniel would always follow me around,” she said, offering a smile. “You’re the first person I brought here, Mr. Emyr.” She continued, “Don’t worry. The owner is great. She’s honest in business, and she personally washes all the dishes after closing.”
At the mention of being the first, Emyr’s expression softened ever so slightly, his icy demeanor warming just a bit.
Before they could continue, the owner returned with the borscht and some side dishes. “I’ve prepared it just the way you used to like, Charmaine.”
“Thanks so much!” Charmaine said, quickly helping with the setup.
Emyr watched the steaming borscht, the sour aroma making his throat tighten. Charmaine noticed his reaction and smiled, her eyes lighting up. “Got your appetite back, huh?”

As Charmaine scooped some into a smaller bowl, she casually responded, “Oh, I noticed. Whenever you eat, you always go for the sour and tangy dishes.”
Emyr’s gaze lingered on her flushed face, glowing from the steam. “You care about my preferences that
much?”
“Of course!” Charmaine replied without hesitation, “It’s a matter of professionalism …
་་
She didn’t say it out loud, but she remembered clearly how Emyr had always liked sour and bitter flavors. She recalled back when they were in Eastlake, when food was scarce, and Emyr would often grab fruit to stave off hunger.
She distinctly remembered one time when they ate hyena meat for lunch. Unable to handle it, she stepped away, only to have Emyr approach with a handful of gourd–like fruits.
Blocking the harsh sunlight with his broad frame, he’d offered her the fruit with a simple, “Eat or starve.”
Between starving and settling for a few bites, Charmaine chose the latter, lacking the willpower to resist.
When Emyr saw her take it, he pulled out the remaining fruits and bit into one, devouring nearly half of it in one go.
Charmaine watched him and followed suit, taking a big bite herself.
Her first bite left her utterly stunned–the sourness made her mouth water uncontrollably.
Above her, the man let out a low laugh. “The more you eat, the better it tastes.”
Reluctantly, Charmaine finished the entire fruit, her mouth tingling from the overwhelming sourness and bitterness.
From that moment, she realized that Emyr enjoyed flavors most people couldn’t tolerate.
Now, as she looked at him, she replied confidently, noticing the dark glimmer in his eyes as he watched her.
With a half–smirk, he mocked, “Didn’t expect you to love your job this much.”
Charmaine recognized the sarcasm but didn’t argue. She simply nodded and replied, “Yeah, do what you love and love what you do.”
