Chapter 614
Chapter 614
In the wee hours of the morning, Hank was awakened by the strange smells wafting from the kitchen downstairs.
Thinking something was wrong, like a fire or someone poisoning the place, he ran downstairs only to see Claire in the kitchen fiddling with something.

He was so scared that he pressed himself against the wall by the stairs. Catching his breath, he ran to the kitchen door and shouted, “Mom, Claire, what are you doing? It’s so early in the morning! Don’t you usually sleep in until noon?
“Why are you acting so strange today? What are you making? What’s that suffocating smell? Oh my god, the oven is smoking! Fire extinguisher! Quick!”
Ten minutes later, Hank and Claire sat across from each other at the dining table, their faces covered in soot.
Between them was a plate of small, charcoal–black cookies. Hank pointed at the plate with a blackened face.
He asked Claire, who was also covered in soot, “Mom, Claire, can you tell me what this is? Squid ink cookies? Ink cookies? Ink biscuits? Why did you suddenly decide to make these?”
Claire propped her chin on her hand, just like Hank, and sighed. “Oh, I couldn’t sleep. I was thinking about some things and couldn’t fall asleep. When I can’t sleep, I like to find something to do. I watched some short videos.
“And I saw someone making dried mangoes. They looked delicious, so I tried to make some. It doesn’t look like I was very successful, though.”
Upon hearing the words “dried mangoes,” Hank froze. “These are dried mangoes?”
“Yes.”
Hank was confused. “What about mangoes?”
Claire spread her hands. “They’re dried out.”
“What?” Hank couldn’t believe it.
“They’re dried out, baked dry. This plate in front of you is them.
“That’s strange. I clearly followed the 1:1 ratio. Why is it so different from the video? Where’s my phone? I’m going to report that short video.”
Hank knew she was upset and stopped her. “Stop it! What’s wrong with you? Sit down, and don’t move.”
He spoke seriously, and Claire stopped what she was doing and sat back down. She looked at Hank, who was sitting opposite her with his arms crossed. “What?”
Hank narrowed his eyes. “You’re not right. You haven’t been right since we got back last night. You don’t usually get up to go to the bathroom at night.”
“I counted last night, and you got up 17 times and flushed 29 times. Now, you’re making these burnt mango jerkies‘. Something’s wrong.” He curled his lip, looking at her with concern.
Claire thought that this matter should indeed be discussed with Hank. After all, he was her and Arthur’s son, so she straightened her back and said, “Hank, I think I should talk to you about this.
“Listen, your father, Arthur, confessed his feelings to me and asked me to consider being with him. I want to hear your

opinion.”

Upon hearing this, Hank secretly rejoiced. In order to prevent himself from revealing his excitement, he pinched his thigh, while his face remained expressionless. “My dad really confessed to you?
“No wonder. I was wondering why you were acting so strange. So, he confessed to you? How did he do it? You didn’t agree, did you?”
Claire sighed. “No, not yet. If I had agreed, I wouldn’t be sitting here in front of you, so conflicted.
“He said things like, We both have you, so why don’t we just be together naturally and skip all the unnecessary steps?”
“He even asked me if I thought his job wasn’t respectable enough to stand by my side. What kind of question is that? How am I supposed to answer that?”
Hearing this, Hank thought to himself, “My dad is really something else. Asking such a question. In Clusia, whose career is better than his? Wasn’t he making it clear that my mom couldn’t find a better candidate?”
After what seemed like careful consideration, he said. “Well, actually, my dad has a point. Of course, I know my words may not carry much weight.
“After all, you have to consider that he is my father and you’re my mother. Naturally, I’m the one who wishes for you two to be together the most. However, I’m not trying to pressure you by saying this. I just want to say…
“Well, let me put it this way: How do you feel about my dad? I mean, what’s your overall impression? And do you feel any aversion when you’re with him?”
Claire thought about it seriously for a few minutes before replying, “He’s a good man. His appearance, temperament, talent, and status are all impeccable.
“When I’m with him… Well, it feels good. There’s no discomfort at all. On the contrary, I feel a certain chemistry.
And your father, he’s quite the gentleman. Gentle and refined, yet still very masculine.”
Hank clapped his hands. “Isn’t that right? The first impression is a 10 out of 10. Now, about Tristan, how do you feel about him compared to my dad?”
“His looks are fine, and so is his demeanor. But I don’t feel comfortable around him. I don’t like him. I always feel like he’s up to something.”
Hank clapped again. “That’s right! You don’t like Tristan, but you don’t dislike my dad. Do you know why that is?
“It’s because you already have my dad in your heart! Your heart has clearly swayed towards him.
“You’re just hung up on your past. You feel like you’ve already been married once, so you’re not worthy of my dad, who sits in that position, right?”
“Well, that’s strange. How did you know?” Claire widened her eyes and looked at Hank.
Hank smiled smugly. “Of course, I was born to you two, so I have high emotional intelligence.
After a few seconds, Claire stood beside Hank and pinched his arm. “Honestly, how old are you? How do you know all this about love? You talk about it like you’re experienced.
“Did you hurt some girl by dating her too young, or did you sneak a peek at something again?”
Hank opened his mouth wide in pain. “Claire, Claire, it hurts! It hurts so much!
“No, no, my studies are the most important. I just accidentally read a few too many romance novels.

“No! I won’t do it again. Claire, Mom, it hurts! Don’t pinch my face.”
From afar, the mother and son, both with dark faces, were engaged in a one–sided beating.
