Chapter 33
Kathryn’s POV:
Dinner was ready, but Grandma hadn’t touched a bite. She just kept glancing at the door. “Why isn’t Lucian back yet?” she murmured.
Her words triggered Matthew’s earlier warning in my mind, and my throat felt tight, and I couldn’t say anything.
red hew’s had day
I couldn’t imagine how Grandma had managed to leave the small town where she’d spent her entire life and navigate her way to this unfamiliar city with her failing eyesight.
And she brought so much with her.
Does she fear she won’t have much time left and wants to make sure I am okay before it is too late?
Grandma didn’t want me to endure life alone, without parents, without family.
And if she passed without me having a child, she feared I’d be left utterly isolated.
Her love weighed heavily on my heart.
Suppressing the ache in my chest, I forced a smile and stood. “Lucian’s just tied up with work, Grandma. I’ll call him now.”
In the privacy of the bedroom, I rubbed my eyes and hesitated for a long moment before calling Lucian.
I needed him to help put on an act. To give Grandma peace of mind. To ease Grandma’s worries. But would Lucian play along?
Surprisingly, he answered almost immediately. “What’s going on?” he asked, his tone steady.
His directness startled me, and I hesitated before asking, “Are you free? Would you come over for dinner?”
“Okay.”
His immediate agreement caught me off guard. He actually agreed? A small smile tugged at my lips. “Are you at the office? I’ll come pick you up.”
I ended the call, changed quickly, and reminded Grandma to stay put before heading out to get Lucian.
Lucian was in the office.
Lucian was typing away on his computer when I walked into his office.
“Have a seat,” he said, glancing up briefly before resuming his work.
I sat quietly, trying to gather my thoughts, fidgeting nervously as I waited for the right moment to speak. It wasn’t easy. Divorce had been my idea, and now I was about to ask for a delay; it was an awkward position to be in.
Once he stopped typing, I swallowed hard, feeling the heat rise to my cheeks. After a moment’s hesitation, I. forced the words out. “Can we put the divorce on hold for a while?”
I finally blurted out. Before he could say anything, I hurried to explain. “I know we’re not exactly fond of each other, and I get that. But my grandma is here, and she’s under the impression that everything’s fine between us. She’s unwell, and I can’t bring myself to upset her with this right now. Lucian, what’s between us should stay between us. This is our issue. Let’s not drag her into it. Just for now, let’s keep up the act. Once I’ve sorted things out and taken her home, you can do whatever you want. Agreed?”
Lucian raised an eyebrow, a smirk playing on his lips. “Anything I want?”

I nodded earnestly.
He gestured toward the door. “Then I want you to leave. Right now.”
I gritted my teeth in frustration.
Infuriating man! What a jerk!
Still, I had no choice but to comply. I needed him to play along. I was the one asking for a favor.
Just before I reached the door, my phone rang.
Seeing Grandma’s name, I shot a quick glance at Lucian before stepping outside to answer.
Grandma…
“Did you get Lucian?” she asked expectantly.
“He’s still in a meeting, Grandma. If you’re hungry, go ahead and eat without us,” I replied, checking my watch. Who knew how long Lucian intended to keep me waiting? Or worse, how long he’d drag this out on purpose.
But no matter what, I wasn’t leaving without him.
“It’s fine. I’ll wait for you both. Just drive safely when you head back,” she said.
“I will, Grandma.” Then I quickly reminded her, “But don’t try reheating the food yourself, okay? Wait for me.”
I was worried Grandma wouldn’t know how to operate the complicated kitchen appliances.
“Alright, alright. I’ll wait,” she assured me.
Finally, I put the phone down, let out a sigh of relief, and took my place once again outside Lucian’s office, waiting.
As I worried, Lucian’s assistant entered to brief him on work matters.
I was growing impatient and pressed my ear to the door, hoping to pick up on how much longer Lucian would be.
No luck. The door was ridiculously soundproof. I couldn’t catch a single word.
Then, just as I was about to give up, the door suddenly opened.
Lucian’s POV:
Cornelius was right. Kathryn wasn’t serious about divorcing me.
She just wanted more of my attention, simple as that.
Her actions proved it. She claimed she was picking up her grandma, but before long, she called me, inviting. me over for dinner.
I couldn’t be happier.
Not only that, Kathryn had taken it a step further by driving over to pick me up from work herself.
It was the first time Kathryn had ever come to my office for such a purpose.
How can I not enjoy this moment?
Chapter 33
I decided to take my time, savoring the moment, and deliberately slowed down.
When Johnson, my Beta, came to deliver a report, I made sure he noticed Kathryn.
“Mrs. Gandillon,” Johnson greeted her respectfully.
He then presented the documents, reminding me, “Alpha, there’s a meeting in ten minutes.”
Seriously? What is wrong with Johnson today? Can’t he read the room?
“My Luna’s here,” I declared, signing off the report. “Cancel the meeting. We’ll handle it via video conference tonight.”
Johnson blinked in shock as I rarely mixed personal matters with work. He then replied, “Understood. What time should we reconvene?”
{
Tonight… could be the perfect opportunity to reconnect with Kathryn.
I paused. “Let’s leave it open.”
Johnson sighed but agreed. “Noted.”
After finishing the paperwork, I grabbed my coat and headed out.
Though I’d kept Kathryn waiting only ten minutes, will she be upset?
The moment I opened the door, Kathryn rushed into my arms.
Oh, Moon Goddess, my Luna’s warmth is overflowing with passion.
I held her close, wrapping my arms around her.
Are
you done with your work?” she asked eagerly, steadying herself as she gazed at me.
“Yes,” I answered, breathing in her calming scent.
““Great! Let’s go home!” Kathryn said, her excitement lighting up her face.
She reminded me of a child waiting eagerly for their parent to come and take them home from school.
Home. Together.
A simple conversation that now felt so extraordinary, leaving my heart full and racing.
Once again, I found myself falling for my mate.
