Kathryn’s POV:
Chapter 19
I felt cold, the chill penetrating deep into my bones.
I leaned against the edge of the bathtub. Amidst the alternating chilling cold and feverish heat, I succumbed to sleep at some point in time.
And so, I ended up spending the entire night soaked in cold water. The next day, I felt somewhat out of it.
Tempest Manor was eerily quiet, with no sign of Lucian’s grandparents. Only the help remained, busily attending to their duties.
I had no intention of staying there any longer. After taking my leave from the housekeeper, I left.
I wasn’t even sure how I left Tempest Manor. When I stood at the entrance of the atelier, Esther was taken aback by my pallor. “What on earth did you get up to last night? How did you end up looking like this?”
She quickly stepped forward to support me as I wavered on my feet. Immediately, she noticed something off about “Why are you running a fever? Your body… Who were you intimate with last night? Did Lucian mistreat you?”
I weakly waved a hand. “No. I want to go home and sleep for a bit. Please give me a ride.”
As I said that, I instinctively placed a hand on my stomach, recalling the wild night yesterday.
I wonder if I should an emergency contraceptive pill. Oh, never mind. It’s not like I’ll get pregnant anyway.
my
condition.
Esther had something to say yet held her tongue. She knew that I didn’t want to talk about it, so she respected my wishes and drove me home.
Before leaving, she was clearly reluctant to do so, wishing to stay instead.
However, I urged her to leave, saying, “I just kicked off the blanket last night and caught a cold. Go back first. I’ll be fine after taking some medicine. I went to great lengths to get those orders back, and I won’t be able to rest easy if you’re not overlooking things at the atelier. Hurry up and go back.”
The orders that had cost twenty million can’t be allowed to be lost again.
Esther opened her mouth slightly. Ultimately, she gritted her teeth and took out her phone. “I’ll head back right away, so don’t worry. Just lie down and wait for a bit. I’ve asked my brother to come and take care of you. He’s on his way now.”
”
After she had left, I lay on the bed in the condominium with a heavy head. Soon, there was a knock at the door.
I remembered Esther mentioning something about having her brother, Felipe, come over to take care of me. Assuming that he must have arrived, I forced myself to struggle out of bed to go and open the door despite not wanting to move.
The moment the door opened, I was greeted by a familiar face.
The person before me was also taken aback, staring at me in disbelief. The sparkle in his eyes went from anticipation to utter bewilderment. “I… Kathryn? Why are you here? No, no, I mean, why is it you?”
It took a moment before Cornelius snapped his jaw, which had dropped in surprise, shut. He withdrew his foot that had been poised to step confidently across the threshold of the house.
秋
“Why can’t I be in my own house? And why are you here?” A blast of cold air rushed in from outside the door, upon which I shrank back and shifted my body sideways, making way for him. I didn’t want to stand there and freeze, nor could I leave him there.
“Felipe called me to come over and help him out. Um, what’s your relationship with him?” Cornelius asked tentatively.
“He is the brother of my best…
my
boss, Esther.” |
Carly slipped up.
“Where’s Lucian? Why isn’t he here, taking care of you?”
All was fine until that name was mentioned. The moment it came up, I couldn’t help but recall how he left in a great hurry after receiving a phone call last night.
E*ck! What a jerk!
My expression went cold, and I retorted, “How would I know?”
Then, I said, “I’ll go and get you a glass of water. You can leave after sitting for a while. I’m fine. I’m sorry for making you come all this way for nothing.” As my discomfort increased, I simply didn’t have the energy to entertain him.
I picked up the glass from the table and turned to head to the kitchen.
