Chapter 29
When they watched the clip of Amy bawling and sprinting to give Bruno a ling. Vanessa and Robyn both swiveled their heads towards Loretta, who was as cool as a cucumber. After a bear, Vanessa found her voice and shot Loretta a thumbs up. “Smooth play, Loretta?”
Loretta just hit the red button when a call from Bruno popped up on her screen. But then. Vanessa’s phone buzzed message asking her to tell Loretta to tune into a certain livestreams.
Seeing Bruno perched on the bridge railing, Loretti was spot on about what he was trying to pull. She had Robyn send a video clip to Amy. The second Amy saw Bruno about to take the plunge into the river, she rushed over there
With a stone–cold face, Loretta told them. “Bruno came up to me before I got here. I told him to die. He’s the only kid in his family and wants to start a business. You think he’d really go through with jumping
Hearing this. Vanessa and Robyn gave each other a look. Vaness got it right away. “So what you’re saying is, Brune’s just pretending to jump to try and force you into getting back with him?”
“It’s so obvious: Robyn rolled her eyes. Bruno’s really scheming to pull a stunt like this”
Yeah, and lucky for us that livestreamer caught it. I’m going to follow that channel nowe Vanessa said, and then she hit the follow button on the livestream account.
Loretta was puzzled. Bruno, as she knew him, would never let anyone in on a plan like faking his own death. He was imper into keeping his reputation clean. The fact that the live stream just happened to be rolling at that exact moment seemed pretty suspicious no matter how she looked at it.
Robyn piped up at that moment, “Loretta, with all this mess Bruno’s causing, he’s got to know there’s even less chance of making up with you. He might go to some crazy lengths. You should keep an eye on him.”
Loretta gave a nod. In her old life. Bruno and Amy had tricked her dad with drugs and kept her busy fixing up antiques to pay for their fancy life. She’d trusted them way too much back then, but now she knew what they were really like and she wasn’t going to fall for their tricks again.
“Don’t stress. I’ve got this,” she told them.
After they finished eating Robyn got a call and had to take off. Loretta and Vanessa left the restaurant together. Vanessa, looking out for Loretta, said Loretta, how about I crash at your place tonight?”
Loretta understood that Vanessa was worried she might bottle everything up, so she didn’t object. When they got to LorettES: house. John was already there, waiting for them
essa spotted John and gave him a friendly hello. “Hi Mr. Broderick.”
“Vanessa’s here.” John said, welcoming her. The Broderick and Jupes Eunulies were close, and Vanessa hait home a bunch of times Sering Vanessa John treated her like one of the family.
Loretta told John. “Dad Vanessa is staying over at our place tonight

When the race was all set for Vanessa, John told the girls to head upstairs and get some rest. As they went up, he gave them a gentle reminder, saying, “Don’t stay up too late.” He knew they’d probably end up talking for hours.
“Got it, they both agreed.
Once they got upstairs, Vanessa hung out in Loretta’s room first. They yakked away until way past midnight; finally, Vanessa dragged herself back to her own room.
Loretta had hoped for a peaceful night’s sleep, but instead, she was haunted by a dream. In it, she could hear the last words Amy had spoken to her in her past life, echoing through her mind.
“Loretta, don’t you think you’re the one who’s prettier and can do things better than me?” Amy’s voice echoed. “But now, your fiancé is with me. All you’re good for is making us a bunch of money!
“And here’s a little secret for you: Bruno put something in your drink that day. He said you wouldn’t marry him and you didn’t want him to sleep with you before the wedding. So, he thought that if he could get you to sleep with him, your dad would have no choice but to say yes to the marriage.
“But I really love Bruno. I fell for him the moment he walked into our home with you. You wouldn’t let him get close, so l gave him what he was looking for. But he still wants to marry you because your family’s got more cash than mine, and you’re way smarter and better looking than I could ever hope to be!
“You think I’d just hand him over to you? No way, he’s mine! So when he slipped you that drug, I made sure Malcolm knew where you were. I just had to do it. And guess what? Malcolm hated you so much that he took the chance to hurt you.
“Bruno’s the one with all the brains. Even if he didn’t get to be with you and he was super mad, he still managed to get your dad to catch you sleeping with Malcolm. He played on your dad’s feelings and promised he wouldn’t care if you weren’t pure anymore. He told your dad that he still loved you and wanted to marry you no matter what.
“But here’s the kicker. Bruno says you’re dirty now. He thinks you’re gross, so he doesn’t want anything to do with you. And about your dad’s death–well, it wasn’t really Malcolm’s doing. Your dad found out about Bruno’s plans, and we were the ones who drugged him. It was just bad luck that he happened to die right in front of Malcolm.
“We should be thanking our lucky stars for how everything turned out. With your dad dying right in front of Malcolm, it just made you despise him even more. You’re all torn up over your dad’s death and can’t face Malcolm yourself, so we’re just using your special talents to restore those fancy old things for us
“Did you really think Bruno was using that money to take on Malcolm? You’ve got it all wrong. We’re taking the cash you’re making and using it to jet set around the world, just living it up.
Loretta woke up from the nightmare, her eyes snapping open wide, and she stared up at the ceiling. Her fists were balled up. and she was breathing hard.
After a bit, she kicked off her blankets and got out of bed. She made her way to the little balcony outside her room. The balcony had a view of a sweet little garden.
It was the middle of the night, maybe two or three in the morning, and everything was as quiet as could be
Loretta grabbed her phone and swiped it open. Just as she thought, there was Bruno’s stunt of jumping into the river all over social media. The pictures showed Bruno perched on the railing with Amy hanging onto him for dear life. There were already over 10,000 comments buzzing underneath.
Loretta tapped on the comments and started scrolling. The top comment caught her eye. [Rumor has it that the guy about to jump is a professor at some college. He’s supposed to have cheated on his girlfriend with her cousin, and his girlfriend dumped him. Can’t handle it, so he’s pulling this crazy stunt. The girl in the second picture is the cousin.]
Below that comment, it was total chaos. People were laying into Bruno left and right, and some were even talking about

Amy.
Seeing all this, Loretta let out a laugh. She knew Bruno’s reputation was toast. If she had to bet, the school would be having a chat with him, and the folks who used to look up to him would be changing their tune real quick.
This is just the start,” Loretta muttered to herself, her mind racing. Thinking back to her last life, when she and her dad were played like pawns by those two, she figured that just trashing Bruno’s rep wasn’t enough.
After skimming a few more of the trending comments, she logged off.
Staring out into the distance, she knew that besides making Bruno and Amy pay, she had to figure out how to get 600 million dollars she’d spent. Broderick Group just didn’t have the financial muscle they needed right now, and their rivals, especially the Lindsey family, they’d be sure to make their move.

Just then, out of the corner of her eye, she noticed a flicker of light beyond the wall. It looked like the kind of glow one’d see from a cigarette.
She blinked, trying to catch a glimpse again, but it was already gone. “Was I just seeing things?” she wondered, figuring she must be exhausted. After pondering for a bit, she decided to head back inside.
