Chapter 2
“HON, Calix spoke softly as he reached out and touched Serena’s arm while she sat on the edge of the bed, trying her best not to cry. She despised what was going on. Even though she already expected that she would be cast aside, she didn’t expect that she would be sent off to war. Not to mention that her husband agreed to it, too.
“Are you
mad? Please try to understand. Your sister has already been through so much in the slums, even if she has her wolf, I doubt she would survive the war he said as he sat down, caressing her arm in an attempt to console her, “I believe in your capabilities, which is why I have no qualms about your parents‘ decision.”
“I wished I could go with you, but as you know, I am not the chosen successor of our pack. My brother will likely be the one who goes off to battle.” He tried to reason with her, but Serena remained quiet. It was only the beginning of the day, but she already felt exhausted and drained. “I’ll have Cesare look after you, so you don’t have to worry. I’m sure he’ll protect you.”
Calix pulled her into a hug and though Serena was upset with what was happening, she decided to be the bigger person and just nodded. However, her heart pounded fast when she saw a hickey on his neck, her eyes widening in horror.
She quickly pushed him out of the hug and stared at him incredulously, trying to calm her pounding heartbeat.
“Why do you have a hickey?” her voice quivered, making Calix’s finger twitch. He hadn’t even realized he had placed his hand against the kiss mark on his neck.
“What do you mean hickey? It’s just an insect bite. I told you earlier, Marga and I had to stay at this old hotel because of the sudden rain last night when we were about to go
hom
“Calix, I wasn’t born yesterday… I can tell the difference between a bug bite and a kiss mark.” She interrupted him sternly, but he scowled as if she was the one being unreasonable.
She let out a sigh and reached for his neck, wanting to inspect it, but he slapped her hand away before she could touch him. He stood
up from the bed, making her eyes widen in surprise. She could feel her hand stinging, but more than that, she felt her heart sinking.
Is that the reason why he seemed no problem with her going to war? Because he was cheating on her?
“Who did that? Are you having an affai-”
“Why are you being like this?” Calix cut her off mid–sentence, running a hand through his tousled brown hair. “I know you were upset because of what was happening, but do you really need to accuse me of something ridiculous?”
He sighed.
“You’re becoming rather difficult. First, you refused to get along with your sister, then you showed disrespect towards your parents when you suddenly walked away and ignored them after calling you. And now you’re not trusting what I’m saying. What is wrong with you?”
“What? I’m difficult? What did I do wrong?” Serena’s frown deepened, “For your information, I tried my best to bond with my sister for the past two weeks, but she kept rejecting me. Even though I was putting in effort, I was being ignored. disregarded, and treated coldly. She told me to stop being clingy
Serena felt her eyes prickling with tears, but she forced them back, trying to control her feelings. No one was paying attention to her after Marga returned, so she put all her effort into working hard. She even asked her father if she could help organize a welcome party for her sister, but her mother quickly shut her down, reminding her to stay quiet and out of the spotlight so as not to overshadow her sister.
Let’s be honest, I’ve been spending time with your sister for the past few days, and it was clear that she was putting in more effort. In fact, it seemed like you were the one bringing her down with your inferiority complex.” Serena felt a sharp pain in her chest as Calix’s words pierced her like a knife, causing her to let out a gasp.

“She confided in me that she asked for your guidance on all things related to being the future Luna and the family business. She even apologized for taking over your role unexpectedly, but you advised her to learn it on her own, just as you did.”
“What? I never told her that
“Enough, I’m tired. I don’t have time to deal with this.” His voice shook with anger and frustration as he snarled, storming out of the room with clenched fists.
Serena attempted to follow him, but Beta Henry’s voice called out to her from the hallway, informing her that the Alpha wanted to speak with her again.
With a heavy sigh, she reluctantly followed Beta Henry into her father’s study, where the Alpha was already seated behind his desk. The beta then excused himself, leaving Serena to face her father alone.
“Your behavior earlier was unacceptable. How could you have just walked away while I was still speaking to you?” he said, his
voice stem as ever.
“What kind of reaction are you expecting from me, Dad? Should I be jumping in happiness knowing I might die?” Serena scoffed in frustration and dropped her attempts at being polite. She had reached her limit for the day.
“Your sister cried when you left the room, she said she felt bad that you need to go instead of her. Now your mother was trying her best to console her.” Silence filled the air as Alpha Robert stared at Serena with a blank expression before finally letting our a long and heavy sigh
“I understand that this news may have come as a shock, but it was inevitable. You have more experience and training in battle compared to your sister.” He stood up and approached Serena, touching her shoulder with a light squeeze, Just go, okay? Don’t make things complicated; do it for your sister. Besides, you’ll only be there to provide support, so you won’t have to be on the frontline.”
His voice softened, and Serena could hear the emotion in it for the first time. Her father gently tapped her shoulder as she looked at him with surprise. After standing there in silence for what felt like an eternity, she finally gave a small nod.
Maybe, just maybe, going to war would make her parents show some affection towards her. After all, she would make a big sacrifice for their favorite daughter’s sake.
“All right,” She smiled lightly, and Alpha Robert acknowledged her with a nod before returning to his seat.
“That was a wise decision. You should start packing immediately. You’ll be leaving for the capital in a week to begin your training with the other representatives from different packs.” Serena’s eyes widened in surprise, and she wanted to say so much, but in the end, she bit down her lips as she nodded in agreement.
Days had gone by, and she was becoming completely invisible in the pack house. Even her relationship with her husband was slowly deteriorating; she tried to swallow her pride and apologize first, ignoring the fact that he might be cheating on her, but Calix began acting more distant towards her, refusing to even mate with her.
“NANNY, don’t cry. I’ll be fine.” Serena said as she watched her nanny cry after she got ready to leave.
“But going to war is….. Annie sobbed, not wanting to see her precious child leave for war. When she first heard the new felt her life crumble before her eyes. Though Serena was not related by blood, Annie loved her as if she were her own daughter, She had cared for and raised her since birth, as Luna Emilia refused to even hold her.
she
“It’s okay, I’ll promise to come back safe and sound, so while I am away, please take care of my family.” Serena choked on her words. She wanted to cry too, but she knew she wouldn’t be able to stop herself as soon as she started, so she decided not to. “I love you, Nanny,”
She pulled her into a hug and then left the room to find Calix. It was already her time to leave, yet her relationship with her husband hadn’t recovered from the argument they had a week ago. She pursed her lips and wandered around the pack house until she caught sight of him, but he was once again with Marga.

“Hon,” Serena’s voice broke through the peaceful atmosphere of the garden, causing the two on the bench to turn towards her. Calix shifted his gaze towards her, and his smile quickly turned into a frown. It pained Serena to notice the drastic change in her husband, but she chose to ignore it, “Can you drive me to the King’s pack house?”
“Why me? You have your driver. Can’t you see I’m talking to your sister-”
“It’s fine, Calix. My sister’s leaving because of use, why not spend time with her? Besides, I’ve been feeling guilty for taking up so much of your time lately.” Marga interjected, looking as though she was dejected.
“No, you don’t have to feel guilty. I like helping you, and it’s fun to be more with you these days-”
“What?” Serena chimed in. feeling upset hearing those words from her husband’s mouth. She couldn’t even believe he would say such cruel things. “I’m leaving today, and you’re saying it was more fun to be with her? Is that why you kept ignoring me? Enough that you won’t even see me oll?”
“See you off? After you accused me of having an affair? Do you have any idea how those words hurt me?” Calix’s voice turned sharp and harsh as he snapped at Serena.
She felt tears welling up in her eyes, her heart breaking into pieces inside her chest. She clenched her teeth tightly, unable to believe how much he had changed from the loving and gentle person she once knew into a cruel and aggressive one.
“Come on, Calix. Don’t be like that, don’t fight. Just go with my sister-
“No, let’s go. We still need to visit the other territories, remember? You can’t do it alone,” Calix interrupted before taking Marga’s hand and pulling her gently.
Serena remained frozen in place, watching her husband walk away, but when she caught a glimpse of her sister, looking back at her with a mocking smile, she instantly shuddered, feeling sick to her stomach.
