Yorick’s body tensed with a violent shudder. It was as if those words had shattered the haze clouding his
mind.
The masked man pressed on. “If Artemis dies, what good is his soaring approval rating? A corpse can’t become president. Once Atticus takes the presidency, do you think he’ll still want to kill a national treasure like Jane? I’d wager he’d sooner spoil her than harm her!”
“Shut up!” Yorick shouted coldly, pointing at him.
Though the suggestion made perfect sense, Yorick knew what assassinating Artemis would mean. The sudden death of Chanaea’s president–elect would throw the entire nation into chaos. Foreign powers would seize the opportunity to invade, and the consequences for the people would be unthinkable.
More than that, with the current political turmoil, Santiago–serving as a general–was assigned to guard Artemis personally. If Yorick attempted an assassination, he would inevitably have to fight Santiago.
Winning or losing was one thing. But once they clashed, Santiago would know the truth. And at that point, their brotherhood would be shattered–they would have no choice but to fight to the death.

“Yorick?!” Santiago’s heart clenched in shock as he shouted his friend’s name.
The masked man, perhaps shaken by the sudden exposure of his identity, retreated quickly after their exchange of signature techniques, seizing the chance before reinforcements could arrive.
Before disappearing into the shadows, he left behind a chilling threat. “Let’s see how long you can protect Artemis, Santiago. Sooner or later, I’ll kill him—and Jane, who helped him take the presidency!”
“You-” Santiago started to give chase, but in the end, he couldn’t bring himself to strike down his old friend.
“General Adkins, are you all right?” Artemis rushed over, concern etched across his face.
“Thank you for your concern, Mr. President. I’m fine,” Santiago replied, gathering his composure.
“Good. Did I hear you call out someone’s name just now?” Artemis asked.
“Well…” Santiago hesitated before shaking his head. “Forgive me, sir. I carmot say for certain who the assassin was.”
Even now, Santiago couldn’t bring himself to speak Yorick’s name. Deep down, he still regarded him as a brother forged through life and death. But despite his silence, word of Yorick’s assassination attempt spread quickly throughout Zovince.
At the time, Artemis‘ early policies had offended many of the elite, but they had undeniably improved the lives of ordinary citizens, earning him widespread support from the people.
Even the abbot of the Chapel of Oros had invited Artemis on several occasions to pray for the well–being of Chanaea’s citizens, forging a strong bond between them.

Not long after, duty called Santiago away on another mission, leaving Jane unguarded.
