Yorick’s mother’s voice echoed through the phone as he stood near the martial arts arena.
Her words grated on his nerves.
As the eldest son, with his father gone, tradition dictated that he should shoulder the family’s burdens. But he was young, brimming with talent and ambition, yearning for a grand stage to prove himself. Being tied down by family affairs–worrying about siblings he’d barely seen–felt like shackles, and he couldn’t help but resent the thought of living such a humble, constrained life.
Still, he replied, “Got it.”
Only after stepping into the arena did he hear the murmurs of the surrounding crowd.
“Hey, did you hear? The tournament’s sponsor promised to marry his daughter to whoever wins the Zovince Grand Martial Tournament!”
“Haha! Mr. Tanner’s daughters are the most stunning beauties in all of Zovince! Especially the elder one— ah, just thinking about her… My, oh, my…”
Hearing the men’s chatter and seeing the gleam in their eyes, Yorick–still in his prime–couldn’t help but wonder just how breathtaking the girl must be.
Raised in a rural village and now striving to make a name for himself in the city, Yorick was at an age where marriage was on his mind. But what he didn’t expect was that the man he would face in the finals… was Santiago.
Back then, the tournament arena was far simpler–a vast open square surrounded by three- and four–story buildings. Thousands of spectators sat shoulder to shoulder on rows of wooden benches, their faces flushed with excitement as they cheered for their chosen fighters.
As Yorick and Santiago stood face–to–face atop the arena, a window in the grandest building nearby slid
open.
A young woman with a delicate face, dreamy eyes, and skin as fair as snow peeked out, gazing curiously at the two men below.
“Miss Tanner, those two are considered the strongest fighters of this era! That one’s Santiago Adkins–bit of a drunkard, really. Doesn’t have many hobbies besides drinking. He’s got a carefree charm about him, but I doubt someone like you would go for a man that careless.”
“What about the other one?” Jane’s gaze lingered slightly longer on the taller, more broad–shouldered man. Though he seemed a bit stern and not one for jokes, she imagined such a man would provide a sense of security.
“That’s Yorick Dotson–the strongest bodyguard in Mr. Sheffield–Grey’s service. But they say he’s a bit of a dullard–never knows how to claim credit for his achievements. So, despite his skills, he’s still as poor as a church mouse!”

Yorick had overheard the spectators‘ gossip and had been discreetly searching for the ethereal beauty ever since. With his level of martial skill, it hadn’t taken long to notice her peeking from the window. But hearing the maid’s comment stung more than he cared to admit.
“Ha! It’s you, huh?”
Santiago stepped onto the platform amidst thunderous cheers from the crowd. Laughing, he said, “I need that Grandmaster of Zovince title–to make a name for myself. Then, I’m heading to Tocvale to get a good position and become a true hero. Never thought you’d be the last one standing in my way!”
Yorick chuckled awkwardly, unable to admit that he wanted to win more for the prize money–and maybe to marry a wife. Compared to Santiago’s grand aspirations, his goals felt painfully mundane.
“Master, why are they still fighting?”
Back in the present, amidst the forest of Divine Mountain, Santiago and Yorick clashed once more.
Even Rosa could see it–the look in their eyes made it clear they were both trapped within the same illusion, reliving the same dream.
“They’re saints,” Isabella replied with a faint smile. “Even my powers can’t fully ensnare them in illusion. What you’re seeing isn’t just a trick–it’s their memory. Their very first battle, over thirty years ago.”
“What?!” Rosa gasped, her eyes wide with shock.
Though their fight lacked the explosive spectacle of Emmanuel’s earlier three–on–one battle, the sheer skill and power they had displayed at such a young age were nothing short of astonishing.
Within the Illusion…
“Jane, if you’re looking for a man who can truly help you, I’d go with the carefree one. That big guy seems a bit stiff–probably not sharp enough!”
Isabella suddenly appeared beside Jane at the window.
Yorick visibly stiffened.
If it had just been the maid’s comment, he might have ignored it. But hearing the same words from Jane’s sister struck a nerve. Perhaps he really wasn’t suited for Jane after all.
Jane seemed to share the same thought. Her faint smile hinted at agreement, though her gaze lingered briefly on Yorick. But before Yorick could notice, Santiago called out to him, pulling his attention away.
“Hey, Yorick! What’s with you? You look distracted! I’m warning you–I won’t be holding back!”
Yorick forced a smile. “Neither will I!”
Their eyes met in a shared moment of understanding before they lunged at each other, igniting a battle that
would shake the world.

Yet what stunned her most was that the very technique that had defeated Yorick three decades ago–Veil of Slumber–was now completely neutralized. Yorick countered every strike as if he’d studied the move his entire life.
“You!” Santiago staggered back, eyes wide in shock. “You threw that fight on purpose?! Veil of Slumber had no effect on you?!”
“Hehe…” Yorick chuckled bitterly. Memories of the past surfaced, half–dream and half–awake. “It was because Isabella and her maid both said you were more suitable for Jane… And because I owed you a debt of gratitude, I let you win. I swallowed my heartbreak and gave up the woman I loved the most. But tell me, Santiago–did you take good care of her?!”
The raw anguish in Yorick’s voice hit Santiago like a knife through the soul.
The dream continued…
After winning the title of Grandmaster of Zovince, Santiago traveled to Tocvale as he intended. By then, he and Jane were already engaged.
“Do you really have to go?” Jane stood beside his packed luggage, unable to hold back the question.
“I have to go.” Santiago gripped his spear tightly and stepped toward her, his voice brimming with passion. “My dream has always been to become a national hero–like Lucian Lowe, sweeping through all enemies with unmatched strength, shaking the world to its core! I want to become the soul of Chanaea’s military and have my name recorded in history!”
Jane listened quietly to his grand ambitions, offering only a faint smile in return.
“Don’t you want to marry a hero, Jane?” Santiago asked softly, pulling her into an embrace. “I promise you- we will marry once I return in glory!”
But Jane didn’t respond the way heroines did in novels. Instead, she whispered, half–joking, half–serious, “And what if you fail? Or worse… if you die on the battlefield? Am I supposed to marry someone else?”
