Emmanuel’s gaze landed on the familiar figure, his brow furrowed. “What are you doing here? Are you planning to arrest me again?”
“General Lowe, I’m sorry. We’re just doing our job!”
Francis‘ face was filled with reluctance as he pulled out a document and held it up. “Mayor Zelinsky has issued a directive to detain you. You are under arrest for the alleged murders of Hank Sheridan and 288 members of Zovince’s Aristocratic Families.”
“Haha, 288 members?”
Emmanuel chuckled. “That number wasn’t the same yesterday. It just keeps growing, doesn’t it? But whatever, a number is just a number. Nothing will change!”
Francis could only offer a helpless smile. “General Lowe, you’re Chanaea’s 5–Star Honored Battle General. Only the president has the authority to order your arrest. However, the laws of Chanaea also grant the Mayor of Zovince the right to detain anyone suspected of criminal activity within the city.
“So, which law takes precedence then?” Mackenzie’s sharp gaze locked onto Francis. “Whose side are you really on now that you’re here to arrest Emmanuel?
“Ms. Quillen, please forgive me!”
He let out a weary sigh and explained, “Our orders come directly from the mayor. If I refuse to carry them out, I’ll have to resign. But even if I step down, someone else will just take my place. That would only make things harder for you.”
His reasoning was logical to the couple.
“If I resist your arrest, will you still take action against me?” Emmanuel narrowed his eyes.
Francis flinched as the pressure rolled off Emmanuel like a storm cloud pressing down on him. His hands shot up in surrender, shaking his head frantically. “General Lowe, you must be joking! I wouldn’t dare! I’m not some old man looking to hang himself!”
“So, this is just for show?” asked Emmanuel.
“Not exactly!”
Francis tucked the warrant away before continuing, “To be honest, this order came from Mr. Magnus under Mayor Zelinsky’s name.”
“Oh?” The couple immediately perked up.
“Yes. He may be doing this to protect you!”
Francis explained his point of view. “Everyone in Zovince knows about the Grand Hunt Alliance on the Divine Mountain. If you go tomorrow, you’ll be facing an army of warriors determined to end your life. but if you are in custody, you’ll be safely locked away, and once Mr. Hale becomes the president, he will undoubtedly grant you a pardon.”

“War God of Northern Region should have no problem escaping from prison. It would be a piece of cake. I guarantee!”
Francis grinned as his words made it clear where he stood.
“Wait here,” Mackenzie instructed. “I need to speak with Emmanuel alone. You’ll have your answer in the morning.”
Francis had no choice but to nod in doubt as he had never encountered this in the past years.
Why am I arresting someone while waiting for their approval before taking them into custody? If the people knew, it would be humiliating. But this isn’t the usual case. The outcome of this mission could determine the future of Chanaea. No matter how long it’s going to be, I’ll fulfill my duty.
Meanwhile, Magnus was climbing Divine Mountain. By the time he arrived at the peak, night had already
fallen.
The Zelinsky family’s quarters had been arranged within a secluded building inside the Chapel of Oros.
Hattie was already waiting for him.
As he noticed her frown, he immediately asked with a wry smile. “Hattie, what’s wrong? Who has upset you?”
“Magnus, did you issue an arrest warrant for Emmanuel under Father’s name?”
Magnus was surprised, but he simply nodded.
“Why would you do this? Are you really just following orders and doing whatever Father asks just because he named you the Zelinsky family’s successor?” Her disappointment was clear.
Magnus placed a hand on her shoulder
offering a small smile. “Hattie, listen to me. I did this to keep Emmanuel alive. You know what’s waiting for him on Divine Mountain. No matter how strong he is, going up there alone is a death sentence.”
“But if he doesn’t come, Ethan is doomed!” Hattie’s eyes flashed with anger. “Do you think I’m clueless? Father and Mason have planted assassins up there. Without Emmanuel’s protection, Ethan won’t make it out alive!”
“Exactly!” Magnus admitted. “Ethan’s fate is sealed. Emmanuel can’t change that by coming up. This is the only way I can protect him!”
Hattie pushed him away and shook her head. “No, I don’t believe you. You’re smarter than this. You could have come up with a better plan!”
“Sorry, Hattie. I couldn’t!” he sighed. “The major forces at play are far beyond my control. Right now, I just want to stay at the table and not become part of the feast. If I can prevent Emmanuel from being served up as tomorrow’s main course, that’s enough.”
Hattie turned away, shaking her head in frustration.
As soon as she left, Blake strolled up with a finger in his nose. “Tsk, tsk, Magnus. Seems like you failed to fool
your sister.”
Magnus only smiled faintly, saying nothing.
“You sure talk big. I’m curious to see how you’ll explain all this to your father.”

Magnus sidestepped him with ease and continued walking. He knew exactly why his father had summoned him, Ezra had arrived at the Chapel of Oros long before anyone else. He had handed over a list of 300 names to the chapel’s friars.
I’m sure Father will talk about Emmanuel!
Sure enough, Ezra was waiting alone when Magnus entered the study. He questioned the moment Magnus stepped in, “You issued an arrest warrant for Emmanuel. Was that to stop him from protecting Ethan?”
“No. Quite the opposite!” Magnus smiled, explaining, “If I keep on doing this, he will definitely come up. 1 know him like the back of my palm!”
His expression was completely different from the one he had shown Hattie and Blake.
“What’s your real intention? ” Ezra frowned. “Did you think that he wouldn’t come to Divine Mountain without the warrant?”
“He’s going to come anyways!” Magnus adjusted his glasses, saying, “But by branding him as a fugitive, hell have no place in Chanaea even if he survives tomorrow!”
“Is that so?” Ezra chuckled. “Well then. Let’s see if he shows up tomorrow.”
He had long seen through Magnus‘ double dealings, but there was no need to call them out. After all, Magnus‘ mission was simple. He had to ensure that Emmanuel climbed up Divine Mountain alone to meet his death.
If he failed, he would no longer be the heir of the Zelinsky family.
