Xylie turned to Levi and asked, “Is that okay?”
“No, it’s not!” Levi flatly refused. “Whether you will marry Mr. Chapman is your own decision. Why involve another man? Especially at an occasion like this—it’s bound to cause misunderstandings!”
Emmanuel narrowed his eyes. He knew Levi to be a calculating man, not one to speak so bluntly without a hidden agenda. For him to say such a thing aloud–it had to be deliberate.
Is he trying to provoke me?
Xylie’s gaze also shifted to Emmanuel, her eyes full of worry.
Her expression spoke volumes. Emmanuel could tell exactly what she was thinking: she was pleading with him not to act on impulse like he had in the past.
Then her eyes darted to the powerful figures surrounding them. Her subtle gestures conveyed a warning to Emmanuel: these people were all waiting for an opening, ready to pounce at the first sign of weakness.
Emmanuel nodded slightly to show he understood. With a calm smile, he said, “Xylie, speak your mind boldly. Marriage is a decision you should make for yourself.”
Xylie nodded back, her gaze shifting from him to Nathan.
“Mr. Nathan, you’re handsome and outstanding,” she began, her voice steady. “It’s no wonder so many women admire you. I, too, hold you in high regard.”
Her words took the crowd by surprise.
Even Levi hadn’t anticipated this turn. Everyone in the room was well aware of what this marriage alliance symbolized. If the Chapman family aligned themselves with Emmanuel, a marriage alliance with the Tanner family was impossible.
While today’s gathering had other underlying purposes, the prospect of solidifying a union between the two families would have been a perfect outcome–killing two birds with one stone.
But then, Xylie suddenly changed her tone.
“However,” she continued, her voice firm, “I know I’m not worthy of you, Mr. Chapman. That’s why I don’t wish to marry you.”

The crowd was shocked by her announcement. Gasps and exclamations erupted, leaving many who hadn’t grasped the situation utterly dumbfounded.

Yet, to everyone’s shock, such absurd accusations were immediately echoed by others.
A wave of condemnation against Emmanuel began to swell, gaining momentum like wildfire.
“That’s right! Just now, Ms. Tanner wanted to speak with Emmanuel first–there must be something going on between them!”
“How shameless! This kind of man can’t be tolerated! Ms. Veronica, you can’t let him off so easily!”
“Get rid of Emmanuel! A scoundrel like him doesn’t belong in Zovince!”
The crowd, as though they had been lying in wait, erupted in fury, voices rising in a chorus of indignation. It was as if the entire scene had been premeditated, waiting for the right moment to strike.
Before Veronica or Emmanuel could react, Ashton–unable to hold back her fiery temper–snapped.
“Stop spouting nonsense-”
But before she could finish her sentence, Emmanuel raised a hand, motioning for her to stay calm. He clearly had no intention of engaging in a shouting match.
He knew full well that no matter how restrained or low–key he remained, these people would provoke him until he was forced to act. They were itching to see him lose control.
So, instead of holding back, he took a step forward.
Seeing this, Xylie couldn’t help but tense up and step forward as well, her heart clenched in worry.
She had known from the beginning that today’s so–called marriage proposal was nothing more than a setup by the Tanner family to orchestrate an attack on Emmanuel. That was why she had tried to speak to him privately earlier–to warn him and urge him to leave before things escalated.

Nathan wanted to speak up in defense of Emmanuel, but Veronica stopped him.
