“It’s fine. I can do it,” Hayden said naturally as he picked up the basin and went to fetch warm water.
The moment he stepped out, Lena turned to scold Keira.
“You went through so much pain to give birth to his child. Why would you feel bad about letting him do something for you?”
“It’s not that I feel bad–I just feel embarrassed,” Keira whispered in defense.
Lena rolled her eyes. “So dramatic.”
Keira shot her a glare in return. “Just wait until it’s your turn. When your husband has to handle your private matters, you’ll understand how awkward it is.”
The moment the words left Keira’s mouth, she saw Lena’s face turn red.
Lena quickly hugged the baby and turned away.
But Keira caught it. Something was off.
“Wait… why are you blushing?” Keira asked suspiciously.
“I am not blushing,” she denied immediately.
What Keira didn’t know was that her words had triggered the memory of Lena’s ridiculous dream–where she had been lying on the delivery bed, cursing Aaron while giving birth to his child.
Just as she was trying to shake the thought, Hayden returned with the warm water and a pack of disinfecting wipes.
He looked at Keira.
Keira sat there, frozen. She couldn’t bring herself to unbutton her clothes in front of him.
They sat in awkward silence for a moment.
Finally, Hayden reached out as if to help, and Keira snapped out of it.
“Just put everything here. I’ll do it myself,” Keira blurted.
Lena turned back around just in time to see Keira struggling with her embarrassment.
She scoffed. “Honestly, looking at how shy you’re acting, I can’t believe you even managed to get pregnant.”
“Shut up!” Keira glared at her, completely mortified.
“Fine, fine. I’ll step out,” Lena said, amused. She carefully placed the baby back in the bassinet. “I’ll be back in ten minutes. Or just press the call button when you’re done.”
As soon as she left, Hayden and Keira both let out a small laugh.
It wasn’t that they were actually being difficult about it–it was just that having a third person in the room made everything awkward.
Lena made her way to the nurse’s station, chatting with the sleepy night–shift nurse.
“Dr. Lane, your friend is really generous,” the nurse commented, clearly referring to the red envelopes.

“When a man welcomes a daughter, he should be willing to spend thousands of gold,” Lena joked. “And since the hospital doesn’t allow cash gifts, if they did, I bet these envelopes would have been worth at least ten times more.”
She casually held up a hand to gesture a number.
The nurse, who had been drowsy just moments ago, immediately perked up. “That much?! His wife is really lucky.
“Luck isn’t about money,” Lena said thoughtfully. “A woman is truly lucky when her husband treats her well.” She had seen firsthand how attentive and caring Hayden was toward me. He took care of everything himself, never letting others step in unless necessary.
“You’re right,” the nurse sighed wistfully. “I want to find a rich and caring husband too. That’s my New Year’s wish!”
As she made her wish, she even clasped her hands together as if to seal the deal.
Lena watched her, then glanced at the window, where fireworks were occasionally lighting up the night sky. She smiled softly.
“Dr. Lane, maybe you should get married this year too,” the nurse teased.
Lena chuckled. “Gotta find someone willing to marry me first.”
“Come on! It’s not that there’s no one–you just set the bar too high,” the nurse argued. “I know for a fact that several male doctors in this hospital have a crush on you. You should see the way they look at you.”
“Oh really?” Lena smirked. “Alright, then. Make me a list. If there’s someone decent, I’ll consider it.”
“Are you serious? I’ll write it right now!” The nurse instantly lost all traces of sleepiness.
Lena yawned. Now she was feeling a little drowsy. But before getting some rest, she had to make sure her goddaughter was fed first.
“Go ahead and make your list. I’ll check on my baby girl,” she said as she stood up.
She walked slowly back toward my hospital room but didn’t enter immediately.
Instead, she stood just outside the door.
She didn’t want to walk in on something she shouldn’t see but she couldn’t help overhearing what was being said inside.
She heard Hayden’s voice.
“Baby, should I be the one preparing the stuff for this in the future, or do you want to do it yourself?”
There was a moment of silence.
Then, Keira teasingly leaned toward him and whispered, “What’s wrong? Just touching me there already has you struggling?”
