Skylar kept her eyes on her plate, not looking up or listening to Callias’s responses.
After breakfast, her phone buzzed. Victoria had sent the payment – two hundred thousand,
exactly as promised.
Skylar caught Victoria’s challenging smirk across the table.
Another message followed:
“Love how the photos turned out, especially those kissing shots. Can’t wait to show Cal your
work. Your effort won’t go to waste! ?”
Skylar sent back a simple “Received.”
She transferred the money to her account, finally reaching her three million goal.
A small smile crossed her face.
While everyone was still distracted with breakfast, she slipped upstairs, changed, and called
a car.
She had goodbye drinks with her friends scheduled – she couldn’t be late.
Skylar made it to the club right at noon.
Her friends greeted her with worried faces.
“You’re really doing this? How long will you be in Florence? Are you coming back?”
“Three years, then I’ll find work there. Settle down. Probably won’t come back.”
Her three friends exchanged shocked looks.
“What about Callias? He’s here, you’re in Italy… weren’t you two planning to get married?”

They knew about her and Callias. She’d needed someone to confide in about their forbidden relationship, fearing she’d break under the weight of the secret.
“I’m over it. Over him,” she said lightly.
Though she tried to sound casual, her friends had witnessed every step of their relationship. They knew her pain and struggle, even if they didn’t know what caused this
sudden break.
“Good riddance! Now you won’t have to worry about breaking your mom’s heart.”
“Exactly! Italian men are gorgeous – you’ll find someone new in no time. Hey, I’ve never been to Florence! You better FaceTime me lots, I want to see everything!”
Their chatter brought a genuine smile to her face.
They were right. She was starting fresh.
Why dwell on the past?
Callias disappeared for the next few days.
Skylar didn’t care where he went.
She spent her remaining time with her mom.
They shopped, took photos, ate at all their favorite places. Her mom gave endless advice about living alone abroad.
Time slipped away in these precious moments.
Five days before departure, her mom left with Uncle Dan on a business trip.
Then her aunt called – her father’s grave needed to be moved due to city planning.
Her mother already faced enough judgment from the Harrisons. Skylar wouldn’t let this give them more ammunition for gossip. She’d handle it alone.

She quickly arranged for a new plot.
But as she was leaving to collect the ashes, Callias appeared at the door.
Learning her plans, he grabbed her hand, frowning. “Do you even see me as your boyfriend? Your dad is my dad too. Something this important – why wouldn’t you ask me to
come? You shouldn’t do this alone.”
“Get in the car. I’m coming with you.”
Looking at his serious expression, Skylar couldn’t tell what was real anymore.
