The Fosters took Skylar straight to their villa in Florence’s historic center.
She tried to politely suggest going to her apartment, but Patricia wouldn’t hear of it.
“The apartment’s not ready yet, and university doesn’t start for weeks. Stay with us, tesora –
it’ll be easier.”
Unable to refuse such genuine warmth, Skylar accepted.
During the drive through the winding Tuscan streets, Patricia held her hand, sharing stories
about growing up with Skylar’s mother in Manhattan.
Part of Skylar felt grateful – even after decades, her mom still had friends who treasured
their shared memories.
Yet another part ached – such a deep friendship now stretched across an ocean, sustained by calls and old photographs.
Two best friends, finally reunited in each other’s lives.
While she was left holding pieces of their story.
Sensing the mood shift, Patricia sighed softly.
“If only your mother could join us soon.”
Skylar caught the regret and quickly reassured her.
“Mom promised she’d visit during the holidays, once things settle down with Uncle Dan’s
business.”
Patricia’s face brightened instantly.
“Such a sweet girl – always knowing the right thing to say. Unlike our Aiden here, who treats

Skylar looked up in surprise.
So his quietness wasn’t just reserved for strangers?
She caught Aiden’s eyes in the rearview mirror.
Their gazes met briefly before both looked away.
Just as the silence grew awkward, Aiden spoke.
“When’s Mrs. Harrison planning to visit? I’ll set up the guest suite.”
Patricia’s eyebrows shot up.
“Look who’s suddenly helpful! Did someone hack my son’s personality?”
Used to his mother’s teasing, Aiden replied dryly.
“If I don’t handle it, you’ll just make me do it anyway.”
“Such sass! Can’t you pretend I’m the perfect hostess while we have company?”
“Perfect at delegating, maybe.”
Skylar couldn’t help but laugh, trying to hide her smile behind her hand.
Mr. Foster joined in, and suddenly the car felt warmer.
Seeing Skylar relax, Patricia squeezed her hand affectionately.
“Make yourself at home, tesora. And don’t let Aiden’s brooding act fool you – if you need anything, just ask him. If he gives you trouble, I’ll straighten him out!”
Their easy warmth helped loosen the knot in Skylar’s chest, bringing out her first real smile in days.

When they parked, she moved to get her luggage.
Before she could reach it, Aiden was already lifting her bags.
She looked up in surprise, meeting his slight nod.
“I’ve got these. Mom can show you your room.”
Knowing how heavy her bags were, Skylar hesitated.
Seeing her reluctance, Aiden added with a hint of dry humor.
“Just go. She’ll never forgive me if I don’t play the proper gentleman.”
