Chapter Two Hundred and Twenty Five
Phil and Austin had been left in charge of the pack.
Alexander had tried convincing me to stay behind, but if Cynthia was going down, it would be my blade that stopped her heart. No one would take that away from me.

“Hold on to me,” Daemon said. Alexander hesitated, then moved closer, pulling me to his side. His hands wrapped around me, keeping some distance between me and the Demon Overlord. In the blink of an eye, we were no longer in the room.
Darkness engulfed us—so thick I couldn’t even see iny own hand. The only thing keeping me from panicking was Alexander’s hold on me. And then, it was over. We stood in a wide, vast land. There wasn’t a single soul in sight,
not even meters away.
“Where are we?” I asked.
“A short distance from Aureonna City. We’ll have to travel the rest of the way,” Daemon responded.
“You couldn’t just spirit us into the city?” Alexander asked his half–brother.
“I would have, if I hadn’t been given rodents to feed on. As you must have guessed, their blood isn’t very nutritious,” Daemon hissed. It took everything in me not to laugh. Alexander had kept his word, providing him something still living to feed from, but clearly, the Demon Overlord abhorred animal blood.
“I guess we could walk.” Alexander finally agreed.
We walked for a few more minutes in silence. I slipped away from Alexander’s hold, drifting to Daemon’s side.
“When we get there, I will be the one ending Cynthia. Got it?”
“Whatever.”
It occurred to me that he really did care for the girl he wanted to save. All the snarky comments had been a way to take his mind off her. Now, he seemed lost in thought–present yet distant. I could see the guilt in his eyes.
“We will find her,” I assured him, even though I had no idea if we actually would. My words did little to console
him.
“What if she’s already dead, and I’m too late?” The question was more to himself than to me. “She’d die hating me.”
Daemon let out a breath, and when he looked up, all traces of sadness had vanished. Like Alexander, he wasn’t one to show weakness, and he’d already concealed his brief slip with remarkable ease.
“This is the plan,” Daemon said. “I’ll disguise myself as one of their High Regents.”
By ‘disguise,‘ he meant taking the form of one of the High Regents.
“Won’t it be easier to pose as one of the Empresses?” I asked.
“Yes, it would be. But that would draw too much attention, and we might end up being discovered. The Regents aren’t as well–known as the Empresses, but they still hold power. This is our best chance.” Daemon explained. He had come up with most of the plan, seeing as he was the one who knew the ins and outs of the castle.
We’d finally secured a vehicle just before reaching the city gates. Alexander drove while Daemon and I sat in the back. I couldn’t miss how his eyes kept flicking to the rearview mirror. He didn’t trust Daemon around me, and honestly, neither did I. My hand stayed on the gun I’d brought along, ready if necessary.

Alexander wore a scarf, covering most of his face, and I did he same. Daemon was the only one who didn’t bother with a disguise.
As expected, our vehicle was stopped before we could get through the gate. The moment the soldiers‘ eyes met
Daemon’s, now disguised as one of the Regents, they stepped back gave small bows, allowing us entry.
That was the easy part. The real challenge was getting into the castle. Daemon wouldn’t be coming with us due to the spell that prevented his entry. Alexander and I would have to handle the rest ourselves.
