Ashley read it, feeling nothing. She was used to this. For Chase, work or friends always came before her. He did things 38 he pleased, never considering her feelings. Disappointment? In the past, yes. Now, she felt nothing
She’d come with delight, only to get the silent treatment from her husband and son. Unconsciously, she drove to their favorite restaurant, the one she and Chase frequented. As she approached, she saw Chase, Tanya, and Sam. Tanya sat next to Sam giggled, sharing a dessert with her. Chase smiled,
playfully teasing him, while
eyes only on Tanya.
This was his “emergency“. That was her son, the one she’d carried for ten months.
Ashley smiled. It was a sad, hollow smile. She stood there, watching them. After a long moment, she turned and left.
Back at the mansion, she finalized the divorce papers. Chase had been the dream of her youth, but he’d never truly cared about her. If not for that night and family pressure, he wouldn’t have married her at all. She’d foolishly believed that with enough effort, she could impress him. Reality slapped her hard.
Eight years. It was time to wake up.
She put the papers in an envelope, instructed María to give it to Chase, packed her bags, and into the car.“To the airport,” she told the driver.
