“She did.”
Chase held him, stroking his forehead. Sam’s face was similar to his.“And you’re still unhappy?” Sam furrowed his brow.“I’m happy, but…” It had been a long time since he’d spoken to his mother. He was happy, but…
“But what?”
Sam mumbled, “But I’m also a little unhappy.”
Chase, propping his chin on his hand, chuckled.“Sounds profound. But…it’s probably because you haven’t seen your mother in a while and you miss her. When she’s free, she’ll spend more time with you.”
Sam nodded, then said glumly,“But Mommy’s so busy. She said she couldn’t see me until next month…”
“Next month it is. Daddy will wait with you.”
“Okay.”
Sam was tired. After chatting for a while, he yawned, got down from his lap, and went to bed. The next day was New Year’s Eve. By late morning, Lily and Jake still hadn’t seen Ashley. Her absence made Lily wonder if something had happened to the Jones family. Chase said Ashley was too busy to come, but she knew Ashley wouldn’t leave Sam alone. Besides, it was New Year’s Eve. Even if Ashley was busy, it was impossible that she couldn’t even make it back for a short while. Therefore…
Around 11 AM, when Chase came downstairs, Lily asked, “Have you and Ashley… gotten divorced?”
Jake was also there. He hadn’t thought much of Ashley’s absence, so he was shocked. Chase took a sip of tea.“Not yet. But the process is underway.”
Jake’s eyes widened. They were going through a divorce? He’d always known Chase disliked Ashley, but…after all these years, he’d thought they’d stay together. He hadn’t expected this. Lily looked at Chase. He didn’t love Ashley, and a divorce was for the best. But Tanya… Before she could speak, Chase already knew what she’d say. He stood up.“I’ll go upstairs for a meeting.” He left.
Lily frowned.“You…”
Meanwhile, at the Jones residence…
After a busy day and New Year’s Eve dinner, darkness had fallen. Ashley and her cousins were preparing for fireworks when she got a video call came from Zark. Ashley paused. Zark would never video call her, unless…
She answered, and Betty’s face appeared on the screen.
“Aunt Ashley!”
“Hi.” Ashley smiled.“Happy New Year, Betty.”
“Happy New Year!”

Betty seemed to be in a garden. She gave the phone to Zark, holding up her rabbit lantern, which was lit with an orange glow.“The lantern is so pretty! I love it, thank you, Auntie!”
“You’re welcome, sweetie.”
Betty said happily, “Uncle Zark and I are going to set off fireworks. Do you want to come?”
Ashley assumed they were going to the Green residence.“Sorry, I’m with my family now. Maybe we can do it next time.”
“Oh… okay.”
They chatted a bit more until Betty’s attention was diverted. Zark took the phone back.“Happy New Year.”
“Happy New Year.”
Without Betty, the video call felt awkward.
Zark asked, “Any plans for later? Fireworks or going out for the countdown?” Ashley shook her head.“I don’t know. My cousins may ask me to go out with them.” Ashley didn’t think much of it. She felt she had nothing to say to Zark.“Shall I hang up?”
“Okay.”
Ashley nodded, glancing at Zark before ending the call.
Putting her phone away, she went outside with her cousins for fireworks. A few moments later, her phone buzzed several times.
