Chapter 13
I saw Ethan again about a month later.
I was playing chess with my dad in the courtyard when Ethan showed up at the gate, looking disheveled and unshaven.
must have had a rough time these past few weeks.
His wife ran away, leaving behind a divorce agreement.
And that big project he had was suddenly pulled out from under him for some flimsy reason, and now he’s been suspended indefinitely.
This is what you’d call a double knockout. The career and love life both destroyed.
As the elders say, “Lose your wife, and no fortune will come.”
I invited him to come in.
As he passed by the pink Mercedes G–Wagon in the yard, he paused, looking confused.
“Your car?”
I didn’t answer. Instead, I asked, “Did you bring all the paperwork?”
“I want to talk to you,” he said.
I looked up at this man I once gave everything for. He looked darker, thinner, older.
Hmm, he’s not good enough for me anymore.
“Before the courthouse closes, let’s go,” I said.
The divorce papers were signed quickly. Ethan crouched by the door, crying his heart out.
I couldn’t help but feel a little sorry for him. After all, he had been good to me once.
“Ethan, a marriage where we don’t put each other first will never work. It’s not what I wanted. You might be a good son, but you’re not a good husband.”

“Ethan, let’s part ways peacefully. You have people you care about more, and I have the life
I want to live.”
“Let’s both be well in the future.”
I drove away, watching the distance between us grow in the rearview mirror.
To say my heart didn’t hurt would be a lie.
had been my everything throughout my youth.
He was once the embodiment of my dream of love.
He had been thoughtful and gave me so many romantic firsts.
During our school years, he treated me like a princess–I was carefree and spoiled.
He was my rock, my genuine partner.
But more than anything, he was his parents‘ good son.
I tried to talk to him about his blind devotion to his parents many times.
It never worked.
I couldn’t understand.
But now, I choose to accept it.
Just like today, even though he didn’t want to sign those divorce papers.
He still couldn’t break free from his parents‘ control and come to me.
Ha! It’s all in the past now.
Life without a man and a troublesome in–law is peaceful.
Strolling around.
Relaxing.
