Chapter 5
The three of us went to the amusement park.
Rainie still didn’t know that her father was dying. She blinked her eyes and looked up at me. “Mom, why are we celebrating my birthday early this year?”
patted her little head gently and smiled. “Silly girl, because Daddy’s going to be very busy soon. You might not see him for a while, so we’re celebrating your birthday early. How’s that? Are you happy?”
“Happy!”
Rainie cheered and ran off to the cotton candy stand.
Tears welled up in the corners of my eyes again.
Davon looked at this scene, visibly moved.
“Avni, you’ve been through so much.”
“It’s nothing.”
I shook my head, looking at him with deep affection. “Rainie will always remember what a great dad you were. After you’re gone, I don’t know if I’ll be able to handle raising her by myself, let alone afford a good school district for her.”
“You…”
Davon seemed to have made up his mind. He said,
“Avni, the house should go to you. My parents are getting old, and they won’t need it. Rainie’s going to start school soon, so it’ll be useful.”
“Thank you, Davon.”
I was touched and leaned my head on his shoulder.
I had only paid one–third of the house, but now it was going to be all mine. It would’ve been

difficult to get it transferred to me, but now it was all settled.
I knew Davon’s confidence came from his career. He was on the rise and had his sights set on a management position. For him, buying another house in the future wouldn’t be hard
at all.
But what he didn’t know was that he was about to die.
Rainie came back with three cotton candies, one for me, one for Davon.
“One for me, one for mommy, one for daddy.”
“Silly girl.”
Davon playfully pinched her little nose.
I repeated to myself in my heart, “Silly girl. Your dad’s about to become nothing more than a cold string of numbers.”
I–smiled, capturing this harmonious moment in a photo.
When Davon looked at me in confusion, I explained, “I just want to leave some memories
for our child.”
Davon smiled and nodded.
I posted the video online again, of course, and it received more praise.
