Chapter 2
“No, no divorce! We’ll pay for treatment!”
I cried, pouring out all my anxiety and sorrow.
I turned to my father–in–law and mother–in–law for help, since Davon was their precious
on, and they’d always been the ones he listened to the most.
“Mom, Dad, you can convince Davon. You both can help me convince him. We can’t give up hope just yet!”
My mother–in–law sighed, then rejected me.
“Avni, the treatment is expensive and exhausting. At this point, we should honor Davon’s wish. It’ll be his last wish.”
I cried harder and turned to Hali.
“Hali, Davon has always cared for you. Please talk to him, let’s treat his illness.”
Hali wanted to roll her eyes at me, as usual, but she swallowed it and immediately scolded me instead.
“Avni, Davon’s final wish is for you and Rainie to be well. You can’t disregard the last wishes of someone who’s about to die.”
Tears streamed down my face like a waterfall.
Davon pulled my limp body up, comforting me. “Avni, I’m sorry. After the divorce, I’ll give you a bigger share of the assets. I’m doing this for you and Rainie. Treating cancer is just too expensive.”
I cried again, and finally, in painful surrender, I closed my eyes. “Fine.”
