The waiter rushed over, his face pale. “I’m so sorry, Alpha! I must’ve misplaced the stand-”
Silas waved him off, his focus entirely on me. “Are you okay?” he asked, his voice thick with concern.
I nodded, though my mind was racing. That was part of my plan, to get Silas hit with champagne and make a public spectacle of himself. Of course, this was just the beginning, and I would make Silas live in my shadow every day for the rest of his life.
Silas’s shirt was soaked with champagne, and I noticed the dark stain spreading across his back. “You’re hurt,” I said with feigned surprise, my voice softer than I intended.
shook his head, giving me a lopsided grin. “As long as you’re alright, that’s all that matters.”
I bit any lip, torn between my anger and something else–something I didn’t want to acknowledge. “I have a shirt in my car. It’s for my brother, but he won’t miss it. You can change into it.”
Silas followed me out to the parking lot, his gaze never leaving me. I handed him the shirt, and he changed right there, his movements quick and
efficient.
“You look… good,” I said, the words slipping out before I could stop them.
Silas smiled, his hand brushing a strand of hair from my face. “Lorelei, you’re beautiful, you know that?”
His lips moved closer, and for a split second, I almost let him kiss me. But I tilted my head just in time, avoiding his touch. Silas laughed softly, clearly embarrassed. “Thank you… for the shirt,” he said, his voice low.
For the rest of the reception, he stayed by my side, never straying far. But no matter how close he stood, I reminded myself of one simple truth: Silas may have been my past, but he would never be my future.
After the reception ended, I stood outside in the cool night air, feeling the weight of Silas’s gaze lingering on me even after our encounter.
The moon hung low in the sky, casting a soft glow over everything, and I knew that Silas wasn’t far behind me, hoping for one last chance to speak with me before I left.
As I turned to look for Branwen’s car, which was now parked by the curb, I noticed Silas making his way toward me, his eyes filled with longing and
confusion.
He hesitated before asking, “Can I take you home, Lorelei?”
I smiled softly, not giving him an answer. The silence between us felt thick, like a tension neither of us was willing to break.
“No need,” I said as I climbed into Branwen’s car, the door closing with a finality that echoed between us. Silas, still standing outside, pressed on, desperate for something more.
“When will I see you again?” he called out, his voice tinged with hope.
I didn’t answer. Instead, I gave him a small, mysterious smile, one that I knew would keep him wondering.
That’s all I needed–to keep him dangling on the edge of uncertainty.
I could see it in his eyes: the frustration, the desire, and the confusion all swirling together, unable to place me but unwilling to let go.
As Branwen pulled away, I felt a strange satisfaction knowing Silas would spend the next few days replaying our encounter, waiting for the next time we might cross paths.
He wouldn’t stop thinking about me–about “Lorelei“-and that was exactly how I wanted it.
Inside the car, Branwen drove in silence, his jaw clenched tightly. The tension radiated from him as he gripped the steering wheel, his knuckles turning white.
I glanced over at him, sensing his anger simmering just below the surface.
“What’s wrong?” I asked, breaking the heavy silence.

He didn’t look at me, his eyes fixed on the road ahead. “You smell like alcohol,” he said coldly, the words laced with disapproval.
I raised an eyebrow. “I haven’t been drinking,” I replied defensively. “It’s all over Silas.”
Branwen let out a harsh, bitter laugh. “Why do you insist on getting close to him?” he asked, his tone sharp.
“The man almost got you killed, and yet you keep going back.”
