Chapter 20
I was taken aback.
“Why are you doing this for me?” I asked.
His face twisted into one of sadness. “You being cheated by an asshole like Jack is my responsibility! I should have protected you, yet I failed. I won’t
make the same mistake.”
A sad smile made its way to my face. He probably still held himself responsible for what happened.
“It’s okay, Haelor.” I smiled. “I promise I won’t be lied to again. You can rest.”
His gaze lingered on me for a while before he nodded his head. With that, he went back down the long hallway. I let out a sigh and shut the door.
Tomorrow was another day and I would have to be ready for whatever it brought. In the evening, I had a video call with Emma, who was having a great time at my brother’s house. It relaxed me a little to see that she was safe.
The sunlight slowly peeked from the curtains, casting its rays on my face. I slowly opened my eyes, blinking the sleep away.
I threw the blankets off me and made my way downstairs. Askhan, Olavir and Haelor were standing together. They seemed to be in some kind of discussion as I approached them.
Askhan was the first to notice me. “Melanie. I see you’re awake now.”
I hummed out a reply. “Good morning, everyone.”
I noticed they all looked pretty serious. Did something happen? My heart started to race at the thought of something
“Is something wrong?” I asked, stepping closer to them.
“I told them everything that happened yesterday night.” Haelor explained.
coming up.
I pursed my lips, not quite knowing what to say. By the look on his face, he was probably still mad about what had happened.
“You should have told me.” Olavir frowned. “I would have made sure I taught them a lesson they’d be sure to never forget.
“No, no.” I shook my head. “It’s not something we need to bother with. Haelor fired them already. That’s the end of it. I don’t want to keep holding them accountable.”
Olavir sighed, still looking annoyed. Haelor folded his arms, a look of anger and annoyance still on his face.
Olavir must have noticed the expression on my face as he immediately clasped his hands, fixing a bright smile on his face.
“We’ll deal with all that in due time.” He smiled, putting an arm around my shoulder. “Right now, I have a suggestion.”
“What’s that?” Askhan asked.
“Let’s have a launch party.” Olavir announced.
“A launch party?” I turned to him, my
filled with uncertainty.
“Yes.” He leaned back, his gaze never leaving mine. “Think about it. Those people on the livestream slandered you, and now they are on the streets because of the huge fines, but people who watched the livestream have always thought you were a bad woman. That way, people would know that what happened was all a setup. It’ll redeem your name.”
“That’s not a bad idea.” Haelor reasoned.
“Right?” Olavir smiled.
He turned to me. “I know you’re nervous about the whole thing but I need you trust me. Everything’s going to turn out great.”
“Okay” I breathed out, despite the nerves eating at me. If this would redeem my name, and save Emma from gossip. Then I had no other choice.

The day for the press conference finally arrived. We were backstage, putting the final touches to my appearances. I could feel my nerves eating at me as I thought of the crowd of reporters I’d have to face.
“We’ll be live in five minutes.” A worker came to tell me.
I nodded my head. I rarely appeared on such occasions after my marriage, bu

“That’s fine. It’s time. Good luck out there.” He gave
a thumbs up and gently pushed me to the stage.
“I’ll always protect you. Don’t forget that.”
I walked to the stage and took my seat at the table. Standing in front of me was a whole crowd of reporters. They were staring at me eagerly and expectantly.
I took in a deep breath and put a smile on my face. “Let’s begin, shall we?”
“Miss Melanie.” One reporter began to speak. “We appreciate you holding this press conference to address the public.”
“It’s an honor being in this position.” I smiled.
